Welsh is one of the oldest languages in Europe.
721,700 people speak Welsh today!
It is around 4,000 years old!

It evolved from Brythonic, the main language spoken in Wales, England and Southern Scotland when the Romans invaded in 43AD. Welsh began to emerge as a distinctive language sometime between 400 and 700 AD – early Welsh poetry survives from this period.

Welsh developed from the Celtic language known as Brythonic or Brittonic. The two most closely related languages are Cornish and Breton.

Welsh is a Brythonic language, meaning British Celtic in origin and was spoken in Britain even before the Roman occupation. Thought to have arrived in Britain around 600 BC, the Celtic language evolved in the British Isles into a Brythonic tongue which provided the basis not only for Welsh, but also Breton and Cornish.

Where is Welsh spoken outside Wales?

The only natural communities of speakers are in that part of Britain which is called Wales, and a small colony in Patagonia (in the Chubut province of Argentina), although there are many speakers of Welsh elsewhere, particularly in England and Australia and the United States of America.

Spoken throughout Wales, in border-towns between England and Wales, and in the Chubut province of Argentina. Welsh is still spoken throughout the region: around 21% of the people of Wales (about 600,000 people), as well as some people outside Wales, including those in nearby England, can speak Welsh.

On his first mission in 1998, he took a number of Welsh items with him including a Welsh flag, a rugby cap worn by Sir Gareth Edwards and Mr Urdd, the Eisteddfod mascot. He also conducted a live television interview from Space with BBC 'Wales Today', during which he became the first person to speak Welsh in Space

Capel Celyn

The community of Capel Celyn located near the Afon Tryweryn Valley were forced from their homes and their village drowned to create a reservoir that supplies water to Liverpool in England.

Twelve houses and farms were submerged, and 48 people of the 67 who lived in the valley lost their homes.

It measures roughly 2.5 miles (4.0 km) long by 1 mile (1.6 km) wide, and has a maximum depth of 140 ft (43 m).

The Welsh Not was a token used by teachers at some schools in Wales in the 19th century to discourage children from speaking Welsh at school, by marking out those who were heard speaking the language.

A "Welsh Not" was a wooden board designed to be worn around the neck of a schoolchild in a bid to shame them from speaking Welsh. These were used in some Welsh schools during the 19th century as a way to punish any child who was caught speaking their mother tongue, and therefore discourage its use.
It was used inn order to improve pupils' knowledge of the English language, the Welsh education system of the late 19th century employed the 'Welsh Not' or 'Welsh Stick' as a method of discouraging children from speaking in their native tongue.

Both specialists and ordinary citizens say that the biggest threat to Welsh language preservation is migration, with young people moving away from Wales to pursue work and housing, and with non-Welsh speakers coming to settle without the will to learn it; the continuous rise is only possible with some effort.
