If you're desired goal is to increase your speed, you can only run at the max pace for short periods of time.

This means that running in short periods of time with breaks in-between can allow your body to recover and therefore run much faster yet in shorter bursts.

This can help you to put on much more muscle than steady pace running, turning it into an anaerobic exercise, which will help your body to burn glucose for energy, instead of oxygen and fats (burned during aerobic exercise).
