Adab In Learning & Al-Quran The Book Of Guidance

First of all, before starting the usrah session and while waiting for other friends to arrive, Br. Tengku told us the the blessings and benefits of Friday.

For adab, what I have learned is that adab is so important in seeking knowledge that it should come before the knowledge itself. Nowadays, many people lack of adab, which cause the blessing of knowledge to fade. I also learned to have good manners in learning.

1) We must first correct our intentions by seeking knowledge for the sake of Allah.

2) Knowledge will not come to us by itself, but we are the one who needs to pursue it. Learning can be anywhere, and not only in class.

3) We should respect knowledge and the scholars by focusing in class and honoring our lecturers.

For the topic Al-Quran the book of guidance, I learned that it is serves as true guide only for those who have taqwa, not for the kafirs. The characteristics of someone who has taqwa are;

1) Believing in ghaib matters, such as pillars of iman.

2) Performing solat properly.

3) Consistently giving charity while helping others.

I also learned that to truly appreciate the Quran, we must;

1) Study the tafsir.

2) Deepen our understanding of it.

3) Not treat it as JUST a routine practice.

This belief forms foundation of Islam and it shapes every Muslim’s way of life.

2) Belief in His angels.

Angels are created from the light and have no free will. Which means they carry out Allah’s commands perfectly.

3) Belief in His kitab

We must have faith or Iman in the divine sculpture or typeface sent to guide humanity. There are 4 kitab that was told by Br. Tengku which including the Taurat, Zabur, Injil, and the final and complete one is Al-Quran.

We started off by reciting the first 10 and the last 10 verses of Surah Al-Kahfi and then continued on previous week discussion.

4) Belief in His messengers

We as Muslims need to believe that Allah sent the prophet and rasul to guide mankind, starting from Prophet Adam until the last messenger, Prophet Muhammad. Only Allah knows the true amount but we Muslims need to be taught with 25 Prophets and 5 Rasuls

5) Belief in the akhirah

We must believe that every individual on this earth will be held accountable for their deeds will be determined for their final destination which is Jannah 😍 or Jahannam 😰

This belief actually encourages me to do good deeds and live righteously.

6) Belief in Qada and Qadar

We must accept that everything happens according to Allah’s will, whether good or bad since He has the absolute power. But, we as his makhluk still needs to be responsible for our choices, as Allah already give us free will within His divine plan.

From what I understand, having all these six pillars is essential for a Muslim. Especially as it shapes our understanding of life and strengthens our connection with Allah. Believe in Qada and Qadar teaches us that everything happens according to Allah’s will, while believe in the akhirah reminds us to always do good, and be better. Without all six pillars, a person’s Iman is incomplete.

He told us that we often get confused with Adab and Akhlak while both subjects are actually very different. For example, just because someone has good Adab, doesnt necessarily mean their Akhlak is good and vice versa.

He also said that actually, as a Muslim, we are taught to “judge a book by its cover” as an indicator of their inner character. Means their manners or how they represent themselves. The idea is that if somone cannot even take care of their ‘outside’ like showing respect and having good manners, it can be a sign that they may nkt be fully caring for their ‘inside’ like their morals and values.

We started off the online meeting by reciting the first 10 and the last 10 verses of Surah Al-Kahfi.

What I have learned is Ihsan means excellence in Iman, worship, and daily life. Its the highest level of Islam, where a Muslim worships Allah with deep sincerity and devotion. Every actions we do everyday can be an act of Ibadah by integrating Ihsan in them. There are two aspects of Ihsan;

1) Ihsan in worship.

2) Ihsan in daily life.

Ihsan in worship means worshipping Allah with sincerity, devotion, and full awareness that Allah is always watching us. For example, praying with kushu’ to Him. On the other hand, Ihsan in daily life means being kind and honest in just all aspects of life. For example, being polite and not talk to parents using rude language or tone and treat them with love and patience.

Aamiin.

Thoughts On Usrah 1

It would be more fun if the session is more interactive and less awkward, but what is important to me is the valuable knowledge that is being shared itself. I appreciate the effort put by Br. Tengku into sharing the beneficial lessons. At the same time, these usrah sessions actually helped me to recall the Islamic knowledge that I had forgotten over time. And because of that, I’d always be happy to join usrah :)

During this first session, I learnt about the definitions of hikmah and its context of ibadah which can be gained through engaging in acts of worship to develop qualities like humility, sincerity and devotion. The objective of hikmah is to help individuals to develop a deeper understanding of their religion.

Niyyah (Intention) is the sincere purpose behind every act, done solely for Allah's pleasure. Correct niyyah differentiates worship from mere habit and ensures deeds are accepted. Some tips to help us to ensure our niyyah is correct are sincerity, purity, clarity, focus, and consistency.

Amal (Deeds) refers to good deeds and acts of worship that demonstrate faith and devotion. Performing these with sincerity not only benefits the individual but also positively impacts the community through kindness and service. Amal is like salah, zakat, fasting, Hajj, and also doing kindness.

Lastly, Ehsan (Virtue) embodies positive virtues like compassion, honesty, and humility. It's about internalizing these qualities and living as if you see Allah, knowing that even if you don't, He sees you. It's a continuous journey of awareness, understanding, action, reflection and acquisition.

Virtues Found in Fasting

During this week, I learnt how fasting in Islam is not just about avoiding food and drink. It is a form of worship that builds spiritual, moral, and social values. Some key virtues include;

Taqwa (God-consciousness) – Fasting helps the soul become more aware of Allah.

Self-control – Holding back from eating, drinking, and desires trains discipline.

Sincerity (Ikhlas) – Fasting is a hidden act of worship that only Allah truly knows.

Empathy and care for the poor – Feeling hunger increases compassion for the needy.

Gratitude (Shukr) – It reminds us to appreciate every blessing.

Forgiveness – Fasting encourages us to forgive others and seek Allah’s forgiveness.

Unity – The whole community fasts together, strengthening bonds among Muslims.

Levels of Fasting

Sawm al-‘Am (Ordinary Fasting)
-This is the basic level, where a person avoids eating, drinking, and sexual activity during daylight hours. However, other body parts like the tongue or eyes might still fall into sin. The fast is valid but not spiritually deep.

Sawm al-Khusus (Special Fasting)
-This level involves fasting with the senses — avoiding sinful speech, bad thoughts, listening to gossip, or looking at haram things. It requires more self-control and awareness of Allah throughout the day.

Sawm Khusus al-Khusus (Extra-Special Fasting)
-This is the highest level of fasting. The heart, mind, and soul are fully focused on Allah. The person avoids even thinking about worldly matters and keeps constant remembrance of Allah. It is the level of the righteous and spiritually strong.

Fasting teaches patience in three ways;

Patience in obeying Allah – Following the command to fast and resisting temptations.

Patience in avoiding sins – Controlling anger, speech, and behavior even in difficult situations.

Patience in facing hardships – Hunger, thirst, and tiredness build strength and resilience.

Takrim (Honouring others)
-Fasting encourages Muslims to treat others with kindness and respect. During Ramadan, the Prophet Muhammad was especially generous and caring. We are taught to uplift and support others.

Rahmah (Mercy)
-Fasting softens the heart and helps us show mercy to others. Ramadan is the month of Allah’s mercy, so we try to be forgiving, compassionate, and loving. Just as we seek Allah’s mercy, we should give it to others too.

Virtues found in Hajj and Umrah

Hajj and Umrah are not only physical journeys to Makkah but also spiritual journeys that build deep inner values. The rituals represent obedience, unity, and submission to Allah. Here are some of the key virtues;

• Taqwa (God-consciousness)
The entire journey of Hajj and Umrah reminds a person to be aware of Allah at all times. Every act, from wearing ihram to performing tawaf, is done with the intention of pleasing Him.

• Humility
Wearing the simple white garments (ihram) removes all signs of wealth and status. Everyone stands equal before Allah — rich or poor, young or old — reminding us that we are all His servants.

• Unity of the Ummah
Millions of Muslims from all over the world gather in one place, doing the same rituals in the same way. This shows the beauty of brotherhood, equality, and global unity in Islam.

• Patience and Self-Control
The long travel, big crowds, and physically demanding rituals teach patience, calmness, and the ability to stay peaceful in difficult situations.

• Forgiveness and Purification
Sins are forgiven for those who complete Hajj sincerely. It is a chance to start fresh with a clean heart and soul, just like a newborn baby.

• Obedience and Submission to Allah
The rituals of Hajj and Umrah follow the steps of Prophet Ibrahim and his family. It shows full submission to Allah’s will, even when the logic isn’t clear like the running between Safa and Marwah or throwing stones at the pillars.

• Gratitude and Reflection
Seeing the holy sites, remembering the sacrifices of prophets, and being part of a sacred journey makes a person grateful and spiritually connected.

• Detachment from the Dunya (worldly life)
Leaving behind comfort, wealth, and daily routines reminds the believer that life is temporary, and the real goal is the Hereafter.

Sadaqah Jariyyah give ongoing rewards even after death.

Virtues found in sadaqah are;

• Purification of wealth and soul

-It cleanes heart from greed, selfishness, and love of the worldly matters.

• Protection from calamity

-The prophet said that sadaqah extinguishes sins like water extinguishes fire.

• Increases wealth and barakah

-Allah promises to multiply what is given in charity.

• Brings peace and happiness

-Generosity brings inner peace and joy to the giver.

• Gaining His mercy and forgiveness

-Charity opens doors to forgiveness from sins.

• Helps the needy and builds social justice

-Strengthen society by reducing poverty and supporting the weak.

• Saves from punishment in akhirah

-Even giving half a date in charity can save a person from hell.

• Strengthens brotherhood

-Love is created, as well as trust and unity in the community.

Summary -->

Overall, my usrah sessions were beneficial and enjoyable. I appreciated how the Br Izham used the time wisely and never conducted the sessions in a rushed or careless manner. Each session was well-organised and meaningful. I also enjoyed the opportunity to meet new friends and connect with others. Most importantly, I was able to revisit and strengthen my understanding of the Pillars of Islam, which I had learned back in school but had forgotten some parts of. I’m truly grateful for these sessions as they helped refresh my knowledge and reminded me of important aspects of my iman

Recommendation -->

I really enjoyed the interactive activities that were included in each session, as they made the learning process more engaging and fun. I recommend continuing with this approach, as it helps everyone feel more involved and connected. It would also be great if future usrah sessions could include more in-depth discussions on other Islamic topics to continue expanding our knowledge and spiritual growth.
