In the book when Noors Uncle sees her wear braids he comments on them telling her " You look like a FOB with those braids" Noor doesn't respond but she tells us how she likes her braids and how they remind her of who she was and of the people who loved her. This reveals how her braids make her feel a connection to her family whom she no longer has.

Auntie Misbah quoted this quote in the book and Noor and Salahudin continue to use this quote whenever they feel lost or hopeless. The quote means that God always has a plan for you and for you to put your faith into him.

This was yet another quote from Auntie Misbah. This quote means that sometimes its better to trust your gut rather then think logically. This is relevant when Salahudin has a conversation with Noor. He feels something is wrong with her but she insists shes okay. He can feel in his bones somethings not right.

In the book its mentioned throughout the book that Salahudin has naturally just hated being touched and this was a feeling he has developed when he was younger. This reveals a very important part of the character because it hints a sign of sexual abuse he suffered when he was a child that caused his hesitation with being touched.

When Noor was younger she and Salahudin used to play together at his house. Auntie Misbah told us how one time when Salahudin accidentally knocked down a tower how Noor would jump and fold into a ball, her knees in her chest, her head down between them . This is important detail because it shows how Auntie Misbah has suspicions of Noor being abused at home because that's not a normal reaction for a child to have. They reveal this detail towards the end of the book before we really know the suffering Noor endured living with her Uncle, so it builds a suspense for the reader like putting the pieces of a puzzle together.
