As advancements are continually made in the field of virtual reality, many different disciplines such as surgical, rehabilitation and mental health have incorporated virtual reality into their treatment plans (Lan et al., 2017, p. 3877). In the surgical field, physicians are using VR to perform difficult procedures with increased precision. VR is also allowing patients to undergo rehabilitation services in a manner that is more engaging and able to stimulate real words circumstances. Patients who are experiencing psychological disorders can use VR to accomplish milestones not previously met by traditional therapies (ABC News, 2016).

Surgical students are now able to learn how to perform different procedures without placing the patient at risk. Virtual reality is not only used to simulate the real environment for patients receiving rehabilitation, but it can also provide as a distraction allowing patients to experience less pain (Lan et al., 2017). VR in the operating room allows surgeons to actively visualize the patient’s distinct anatomy and identify barriers that they may encounter.

Cost is a major factor in the limited use of virtual reality. Many facilities have limited access due to cost and lack of infrastructure needed to implement virtual reality (Ferche et al., 2016). Lack of training is also a factor that decreases the use of virtual reality. Many providers are not adequately trained in virtual reality which leads to it not being used frequently.
