Many factors contributed towards the hunt included anxiety by strict Puritan religion and the fear of the forests. Many women in that time were thought to be an easier target by the dark forces of the world. Among the Puritans came the core of puritanism which gave into the prejudice towards women. One of the ways to know they were a witch was if they had a third nipple so girls would take off all clothing. A witch trial  started with an accuser that enlists someone to the title of a witch later was brought to court. A witch trial is composed of spectral evidence which later were accused of being a witch anyways. During these Witch trials, they were also tested by various  ways to make sure they were an actual witch. Ironically, claiming to be a witch was the only way you were allowed to live and a failure to confess would bring the death sentence. The belief that some were chosen and others rejected which created a criteria of insecurity and judgment. Most people in the village made a judgment which created labels for others as saved or unsaved. In the drawing below, the man on the left is shown to be a godly man, in the middle shows a man of intelligence, and on the right shows a man who seems to be one of the recruits of the devil. Some of the beliefs translated by the Puritans from the Bible were total depravity which was the belief that we are all born in sin, theocracy which is the creation of a new nation run by Jesus, and predestination which only the elect would be saved. These beliefs were shaped by the puritans to add to their other theory of building a Utopia called the City upon a Hill. Another belief that the Puritans strictly believed in was that witches existed and witchcraft was real.
