Kuwait was established in 1756. In the late 1800's, Britain provided naval protection to Kuwait's gulf border in exchange for allowing London to control Kuwait's foreign affairs. In the 1930's, Iraq first made claims to Kuwait's land because of the amount of oil the country had. After gaining independence from Iraq, Kuwait claimed its land and settled a cultural border with Iraq, which had to be fought over. The border between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait had to be negotiated heavily. After World War 1, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait agreed to have a neutral zone along the Persian Gulf.
