Hi, my name is David Groenewald. I enjoy rock/symphonic metal music, Pizza and hamburgers with beer, reading, watching Netflix, and otherwise just chillling.

I am a palaeontologist (postdoc) from the Evolutionary Studies Institute. Currently not tutoring anything, but did tutor 1st and 2nd year palaeontology courses for Geology and APES during my time as an honours through PhD student.

Things that excite me about tutoring:
Teaching and inspiring the next cohort of palaeontology students.
Seeing the look of wonder on the student's faces when they see and touch real fossils.

Frustrations include:
Students who couldn't care less about the topic and disrupt the rest of the class.
Students who make minimal effort to complete assignments.

I believe I have a good understanding of what is required of me as a tutor in your discipline. I have been supported by the professors who were lecturing the courses and by other tutors as well.

Hi there, my name is Cassandra Nussey. In my spare time, I sew (occasionally for sale) and play Ultimate Frisbee for Wits. I love to watch hour(s) long video essays on Youtube and occasionally play board games and games like DnD with my friends.

I am currently studying an Honours in International Relations. I majored in International Relations and Political Sciences last year at Wits (I'm excited about graduation). I will be tutoring first-year IR students.

I am excited to tutor as I believe that students like to connect to students closer to their age and open up more. I would like to help ensure that students don't get lost in the system or become demotivated to do university work. I enjoy working and interacting with people. Personally, I feel that I learn more by teaching and discussion than by other teaching methods. What does frustrate me about tutoring is that I can't predict or help students that don't ask for help or ensure that they do their work timeously.

I believe I have a good understanding of what is required of being a tutor as I have tutored high school students in various subjects before. Therefore, I have some previous knowledge, skills, and resources that I can provide to my students on top of Wits' resources. I have been supported by my tutors and lecturers in the past by them providing feedback on how I can improve my marks for assignments.

Greetings colleagues! I was named Mahlatsi upon my birth and for some cultural reasons, when I turned 5 years old, I was renamed. From the age of 6 to 16, I answered the new name Sarah till I realised in my 17^th year that I am Sarah without an ‘h’. Thus now, I go by Sara Seopetsoa which will unlikely change again! My favourite thing to do is to type while watching Netflix series.

I am doing a Master of Education degree with the Education Leadership and Policy Skills division. The course that I am tutoring is Education III, which I am tutoring for the second time this year. What excites me about being a tutor is getting to be surrounded by students who are invested in their education and getting to walk with them through their academic development. What I can say frustrates me is how much I put all my time into ensuring that my students are academically sorted while neglecting my own studies in the process. I can agree that I have not mastered how to balance the two!

In general, what is required of me what explicitly stipulated and communicated which is the reason I have a good comprehension of what I need to do to ensure that students grasp the content and that the academic objectives of the course I am tutoring are well achieved. The team that I am working with always ensure to hold a weekly meeting where we get to reflect on our tutorials and get advice on what to implement in our upcoming tutorials. Hi, My name is Owami Tshuma. I enjoy all sorts of music so its hard to pick just one genre. I really enjoy going to the gym in my spare time, I love reading books, watching movies, eating and spending time with those I love.

I am really excited to tutor IR because I am really passionate about the subject and it excites me to be able to interact with others who share the same interest. I believe tutoring is about reciprocity, and as young academics there is a lot we can all learn from one another. I am Gcinikhaya Jiba, as I was walking perpendicular to this floor here I was coming from fetching my BSc (Honors) in Mining Engineering. In the early hours of this day I listened to deep house music very loudly (I can recall listening to Black Coffee - Music is the answer) as an appreciation for carrying me and encouraging me during the course of my studies.

I greet you all colleagues, my team. When I was repeating my third year in 2020, I decided to go ask to assist with Education Mathematics at the WSoE to avoid having more free time. I was very grateful when Prof Anthony Essien offered an opportunity to tutor Mathematics I. I tutored this course as a volonteer in 2020 and 2021, then eventually got hired as sessional tutor of Mathematics for Primary School Educators III and PGCE Mathematics in 2022. In 2023, I am tutoring Mathematics for Primary School Teachers IV.

I have always had an ever-ending love for Mathematics since secondary school, where my Mathematics teacher used to leave the class with me. While in my undergrad. I have participated in various entities delivering this subject to a variety of learners and students. When working in these entities I enjoyed mostly having one-on-one sessions with learners and/or students as this gave me an opportunity to critically understand what each respective learner and/or student needs.
This small experience laid a very good foundation when I had to transit to tutoring in a class composed of a number of students.

It had always been my biggest fear when I have to go to a class (or rather tut room) full of students, all there to listen to me. This is because I am a shy person in nature. When I start or have started delivering to the students and engaging so perfectly with them, as if I was never scared at first, I get so excited.
I believe that having those engagements with my students is what makes me to be always hungry to know more, as I always engage with different personalities, from different backgrounds, religions and cultures in a professional space.

Having unbiased treatment towards my students and making them feel free at all times is what makes all the lessons I had to be always productive.

From when I started as a volunteer tutoring with the WSoE - Mathematics Division, I had always felt like part of the family. The amazing, endless support that I have been getting speaks in volumes. I believe I am very aligned in fully understanding my role as a tutor.

Hey everyone,

My name is Ziithe Kharika, I am a Post-Grad Political Science & International Relations student in the Social Sciences stream. I am a lover of life and everything about it. The travel, the music, the arts, the sports, the people…I live for it all. My intentions are not to change the world but to simply understand it better, which in my opinion political sciences and international relations best provided the tools that enable me to analyse and explain the events around me. For me, political sciences and International Relations form a part of our daily lives, no matter what our outlooks and interests are. And herein sits what has motivated me to join the tutor training programme, I believe this in some part will go a long way in equipping me with the skills and knowhow that would allow me to be able to impart with things that I have learned onto someone else. Sadly, I am not going to be tutoring this year, yet I had applied for it. In high school, I tutored my fellow classmates in Mathematics and Physical Sciences. In 2021, I worked with FYE as a mentor to first-year engineering students and that helped me learn that tutoring and guiding other students allows me to learn and grow as a person and be better.

What excites me about tutoring is seeing students learn and understand what I am teaching. It is seeing the glow in their faces as they absorb the new information, I am giving to them. What frustrates me is coming across students who ignore the lessons being taught in class and who choose to disturb other students who are trying to learn.

I believe I have a good understanding of what is required of me as a tutor in my discipline. I have some experience from tutoring in high school and when I worked as a mentor to first-year engineering students, I was able to tutor some in their modules. Lectures and close friends have supported me in developing this understanding because whenever I felt confused about a module. They were able to break it down for me and show me an easier method to understand what was happening.

I have already tutored graduate and postgraduate students where I previously was on computational chemistry during my PhD degree and I think I will still have an opportunity to do it at Wits

Being a tutor is not frustrating for me, it is a challenge you need to tackle every day and this will help you to be better and better with time. When you tutor motivated students, your desire is to know more and more in order to help them in their journey but when you tutor demotivated students, you don't need to improve yourself because their level is not good and you will be bored

I think I lack some pedagogical methods to tutor and this is an opportunity to learn from other tutors during the training. I think a good method can help students to understand what is required from them and you can enjoy what you are doing at all times. I have been supported by my postgraduate supervisors during my tutoring period

I think the concept of tutoring in general excites me. Doing well and sharing ideas with students as well as creating a welcoming space is something I really strive to achieve. I think something that could maybe be frustrating is that I struggle with articulating my ideas sometimes and as a tutor that is an important skill to have. I struggle with communication it could affect the way I teach students.

I do think I have a good understanding as I have recently had my first tutoring sessions and while they haven't gone perfectly, I think it's a step in the right direction for me to better my skills by being able to teach others.

Dumelang, I am Lesiba Phahladira. I do not necessarily have favourites in food and places because there are many due to memories and emotions I attach to those foods and places.However, the food definitely have to be homemade comforts. I like the fresh and crisp outdoors and walking up remote villages. I enjoy chatting up old people enquiring about the past...just as much as I sit searching through archives and documentaries in my downtime. I am in the faculty of humanities in the department of anthropology. Currently, I tutor in the Critical Thinking component of the first year module for Engineering students under ADU. I enjoy encountering different personalities,dreams and aspirations in tutoring while on the other hand I get very frustrated with the grading and assessing students. I often think I am strict or rather that assessment criteria are not very fluid and creative in that I feel it is limiting.

I feel that I am very clued up with what is expected of me in tutoring Critical Thinking component. I think it is great when a student's academics are well balanced with their social realities where they can apply their experience to find solutions for their lived realities. The critical thinking component allows room for students to apply what they learn to cases of social ills and challenges in the cases presented in their studies.

What frustrates me about tutoring is students who do not attend and appear to be struggling with the module. I find it very hard to actual assist such a student as I do not engage with them, so it is difficult to navigate their work.
I believe over the years as a tutor, from 2021 to present, I was able to develop a better understanding of what is required of me. Additionally, I completed tutoring course within the humanities in 2021, which gave me a better understanding of this role.

Hey everybody! My name is Patience Sithole, I am currently doing my LLM at the Wits School of Law. I tutor first year Engineering students in a Critical Thinking course under the ADU in the Engineering Faculty. I also tutor Criminal law to BA Law and LLB students under the CLM Faculty.

I love to bake and cook, I am lactose intolerant so that forced me to develop recipes and as a result, I decided to start a business that caters for people who are lactose intolerant/those who have food allergies. I love music, my favourite artist is Sade Adu, I enjoying listening to jazz and RnB/Soul music after a long and hard day at Wits. My favourite colour is pink and my favourite food at the moment is idombolo and lamb stew (especially if it's made by my mom). I love the outdoors and I also enjoy painting in my free time.

What excites me about being a tutor is that it has helped me discover my passion for teaching and it is super rewarding when you see students improve in their understanding/command of the content. What frustrates me about tutoring is that some students do not value your time and effort which normally manifests itself in the standard of work they submit.

It is very exciting when students challenges me and has plenty of questions for me. I love an engaging session! The most frustrating thing is when students refuse to answer and engage to make the session productive but it is also understandable.
I was a tutor since 2021 and I had tutor training workshop each year for us to understand the role of tutors against the role of lecturers. I feel I do have a good understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a tutor.

I am in the faculty of engineering and built environment, pursuing my master of science degree in research for metallurgical engineering. Currently, I tutor first year engineering physics in the ADU and second year extractive metallurgy in the school of chemical and metallurgical engineering.

I enjoy engaging with students during tutorial sessions and helping them understand course content. What frustrates me about being a tutor is students who believe that tutors are meant to solve their tutorial questions for them and their work is to take pictures of what I write on the chalkboard without them understanding or attempting the questions by themselves first. Most students want to be spoon-fed and they don't realize that the role of the tutor is to assist and support them while doing their work and not actually do the work for them.

I believe that I do have a good understanding of what being a tutor requires through my past experiences of tutoring and mentoring in the university. I have been a tutor since 2020 and I worked with supportive supervisors and course coordinators that gave me a better understanding of this role. I have also invested myself in this journey with intentions of bettering my skills for the benefit of the students and paving my way into the academic and research field.

What excites me about being a tutor is the joy in the students' eyes once they understand a concept they've been struggling with. It brings me such joy to see students win because I know how hard university is. What frustrates me as a tutor is not being able to help everyone because you have the capacity for a few students to efficiently help where you can. Hi colleagues, my name is Mosibudi Rampya, a Masters student tutoring Pharmacology from the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology.

I am an explorer when it comes to music hence I don't have a favourite music genre but love anything by Shane and Shane, Mandisi Dyantis and Bongeziwe Mabandla. The Wilds Nature Reserve would have to be my current favourite place and the rest remain undiscovered. I'm not sure if running is considered a hobby but I enjoy doing it and plan to do it even if I don't have the time because I love the self-talk I have to do to finish the goal and the great feeling after running (most times). I don't have a favourite colour as I appreciate everything from nude earthy colours to the bright colours like lime and orange.

Being able to contribute to a student achieving their learning outcomes is what excites me about tutoring. Tutoring is frustrating when students are not responsive during a tutorial or don't prepare for a tutorial.

I think I have a good understanding of what is required to be a Pharmacology tutor as trained by the Office of Student Success, CTLD and a brief by the Department of Pharmacology.

I am Simba, informally known as King. I have an affinity for dark colors, particularly black, as they possess the power to cast shadows on my reality when necessary. While I deeply appreciate deep house music, African instrumentals also hold a special place in my heart. As a gym fanatic, my interests and hobbies revolve around physical fitness. I find solace in places where nature is well-preserved and have yet to pledge loyalty to just one.

Solid foods do not appeal to me; I consume them merely for survival. Instead, I derive satisfaction from beverages like shakes, porridge, mageu, and yogurt.

Currently, I am pursuing a degree in electrical engineering offered by the faculty of Engineering and Built Environment. Although I initially applied to be a tutor, I was not selected as the 1st training session had concluded and tutors selected from that batch . However, through my own initiative, I began tutoring 1st year students after reaching out to several lecturers and peers. As an ADU tutor, my primary responsibilities include aiding in computer literacy, engineering analysis, design, and professional development.

Serving and providing valuable assistance to students not only fulfills me but also helps me maintain and expand my knowledge base. It is a mutually beneficial process where we both teach and learn from one another. Nevertheless, the expectation of students relying on my expertise, even without prior access to the tutoring content, can sometimes be frustrating and stressful.

I have a thorough understanding of my roles, duties, and expectations as a tutor. By connecting with postgraduate students, I aim to comprehend their journeys and shape my own, as well as those of my students. As for my favorite place, I'm a nature enthusiast, so I find solace in the serenity of the mountains. Hiking, taking long walks and exploring the great outdoors are some of my most cherished hobbies. When it comes to food, I have a weakness for anything with a hint of spice, except Sea food; it makes me feel nauseous. I simply can't get enough of pap and chicken. Lastly, my favorite colors are black and brown; well I guess most guys prefer such colors.

In terms of my academic background, I belong to the Faculty of Engineering and the Build Environment and am currently pursuing my master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand. Engineering has always fascinated me because I enjoy doing calculations, and I'm eager to share my knowledge and help students excel in this course. Teaching is a two-way street, and I believe we learn a lot from each other.

As a tutor, there are aspects that both excite and frustrate me. What excites me the most is the opportunity to witness the growth and development of the students I tutor. Being able to guide and support them in understanding complex concepts and seeing that "aha" moment on their faces is incredibly rewarding. The passion and enthusiasm that students bring to the learning environment energize me and keep me motivated.

However, tutoring can also be frustrating at times. It can be challenging when students struggle to grasp certain concepts or when the learning process becomes stagnant. I believe that frustration can be turned into a catalyst for finding new and innovative ways to engage students and make learning more accessible and enjoyable.

Regarding understanding my role as a tutor in this discipline, I have put in significant effort to gain a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. I have immersed myself in extensive research and coursework to ensure that I can provide accurate and up-to-date information. Additionally, the support and guidance from my professors and mentors have been invaluable in helping me develop a strong understanding of the expectations and responsibilities of a tutor. They have provided me with resources, feedback, and constructive criticism, enabling me to continually improve and refine my tutoring skills.

In conclusion, I'm excited to embark on this educational journey with all of you. I'm not here just as a tutor but also hopeful to become a friend or friends with you all, and to learn from each and every one of you. Let's make this journey a memorable and successful one together!

My name is Otto Joseph and I love jazz. I am an MEng Industrial Engineering student and I have an MSc Chemistry. I tutor Physics and Chemistry. I enjoy learning how to teach different types of students. I do not like when students do not show effort in their work as it wastes time. My go-to music is 1990s–2010 Bollywood love songs, which change according to my mood. I don’t have a favorite place. I honestly feel most content when my favorite human is by my side, so the place itself doesn’t matter. However, I would love to visit Monaco someday. On this note, my favorite hobby is watching F1 and keeping up with all F1-related news. Let’s forget that’s the only news I even keep up with. And well, my favorite color is black. I’m a 3^rd-year BA Law student. I shall be tutoring Law of Persons in the second semester.

I am thrilled to create an environment whereby first-year law students feel comfortable voicing their struggles and seeking help. I’ve been tutoring primary and secondary school students for approximately 5 years now. So that helped me realize that communication is sometimes an issue on my side. I have worked on that and will do so before I start tutoring. In addition, I also look forward to sharing tips with the students that I wish someone had told me when I was in my first year.

I am currently pursuing a MSc med Pharmacology degree in the Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology. I hope to tutor students from different health science degrees enrolled for pharmacology modules.

What excites me about tutoring is the opportunity to engage with scientific content even further. It is said to truly master content one must be able to teach it. I think it is very fulfilling to engage with others and to help them realize how interesting the human body can be. I am frustrated by disorganized schedules.

What excites me most about being a tutor is the opportunity to witness the student’s growth and development firsthand. There's something truly gratifying seeing the light bulb moments when everything clicks into place for students. However, it can also be frustrating at times, especially when I am feeling irritable and impatient about a student who's not getting the concept in question is going about things wrong during a tutorial.

I believe that I have a good understanding of what is required of me as a tutor in my discipline. Firstly, I've assessed my understanding of the subject matter and I believe I have a strong grasp of the material typically covered. I've spent considerable time studying and mastering the key concepts within my discipline. Secondly, I've reflected on my ability to explain concepts clearly and effectively. I've always been praised for my communication skills, and I've often found joy in helping others understand complex ideas. My previous experiences with teaching and tutoring have also provided me with valuable insights into how to effectively convey information to students. Thirdly, I've sought feedback from friends, family members, and colleagues regarding my teaching abilities. Their input has been overwhelmingly positive, which has boosted my confidence in my ability to tutor effectively.

I've been fortunate to receive support in developing my understanding of what is required of me as a tutor in my discipline through various channels.
