I chose a topic that had to do with usage of phones during studying. I looked at how they impacted students and what the outcome was. Based on my observations I argue that being in an environment that is already so busy and loud, it is not beneficial to constantly keep check one’s phone because they will never be able to focus.

Some of my strengths during this project included observing people and getting enough content for my paper. The interview I had with a student, who was studying at Starbucks in Cottrell, gave me insight I needed to support my claims made off of my observations. The student I interviewed said that when she goes to study there, she purposely puts her phone down or out of sight. She gave me lots of good information and I was able to add it into my paper.

Some of my weaknesses were finding outside scholarly sources as well as making it a cohesive paper. I had loads of information but it was hard to organize it in a way that made sense. Also finding sources was hard because sometimes I couldn’t get access to them or I would have zero results for my topic. Although it was hard finding those sources that supported my paper, they reinforced my points and made the essay stronger.

I used different strategies during the process of creating my paper. One was making sure I was there long enough to see all different students come in and out of Cottrell. When taking observation notes I wrote down everything I heard and saw.

It was out of my comfort zone writing down what I saw other people do and watching their every move. It was challenging not being able to see what students were using their phones for and also if they were just relaxing or trying to study. It was also hard trying to find sources that supported my claim.

I learned that phones impact studying, and it’s hard to focus when I have my phone around. I really enjoyed the process of writing this essay. Observing people was more interesting than I thought it would be. It taught a lot about how people behave in public. My suggestion for students coming into this class is manage your time well, and prioritize deadlines.

I would interview more than one person, and I would sit in different spots while observing people. I wish I created a more detailed way to take notes while observing. I also wish I could've gone more than twice and at different times of the day.
