Plants are necessary for human life. According to all major religious beliefs and scientific theories, plants existed before humans. Plants serve two major roles in the lives of humans and other animals: a source of oxygen and a source of energy. Without plants, we as humans would run out of both food and oxygen. Plants convert our CO2 waste into oxygen which we can breathe. Plants also provide us with energy either directly by eating them or indirectly by eating something that ate the plant directly.

This video is a 5 minute animation about photosynthesis. I believe that it was originally designed for children. I chose this video because it is brief yet gets the ideas across. The video starts by explaining how plants make their own food via carbon dioxide which makes its way into the plant via the stomata, light via choloroplasts, and water via the plant's root system. It then provides the formulas that start with these materials in order to produce glucose. Even though it is a children's animation, it gets in depth.

The Megrelian Birch, or Betula megrelica, is an angiosperm native to Georgia. It is a very small species discovered in the 1930s. The only ones that were domesticated were actually in Russia, but they died out. After those two birches died, their whereabouts became a mystery because their origin had been lost. In 2013 they were rediscovered in Northwest Georgia.
Source: http://globaltrees.org/threatened-trees/trees/betula-megrelica/

This diagram shows pre-Neolithic Era, Neolithic Era, and late Neolithic Era. I like this diagram because it is a good flow chart of how humans existed throughout time. Like I mentioned in the discussion, I think civilization was the big take away from this era. Cities that had governments, societies, and currency helped humans become what we are today.

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) catapulted the world of nations into a global society during the Third Agricultural Revolution. GMOs, or GMOs as we now think of them, make up the vast majority of our food supply. This scares a number of people who distrust the scientific community because altering the genetics of food could have disastrous consequences. Thankfully there are strict regulations on GMOs to ensure that they are safe. This SciShow video talks about how GMOs don't hurt you but how they do help our society grow food necessary for our survival.

I think that Aloin B is the most influential chemical used in the world that is derived from a plant. Aloe Vera Gel contains Aloin B, which is the chemical that helps heal our body from burns. It is also used as a bitter flavoring in food. Everyone gets burned at some point. This semester I got severe burns from cooking oil. I immediately went to my dining room and tore off some aloe to put aloe vera gel on my arm. The pain was gone the next day despite some pretty nasty scaring that would indicate a severe burn.

I think that the world will not support human life if we continue down our path. With the issues in the Middle East ramping up to cause another major war between world powers with nuclear capabilities, our population growing at a rate that our environment cannot adapt to, and our killing the environment for the unrestricted use of natural resources, I do not think that humanity will exist in a few hundred years unchecked. With technology increasing the effectiveness of our weapons and our unwillingness to back away from violent conflict I think that we will be killing off our own population more. We are also using natural resources like fossil fuels, water, and lumber at a rate that neither us nor the environment can replace.
