The term geisha literally translates to mean "entertainer". Some prostitutes refer to themselves as "geisha", but they are not. A geisha's sex and love life is usually distinct from her professional life. A successful geisha can entertain her male customers with music, dance, and conversation.

Based  on the movie, the timeline in the movie is taken in  around the time of world war 2. 


In the movie, the location is mostly occur in kyoto around gion.
Gion is a district known for its geisha. it is located around Shijo Avenue between Yasaka Shrine  in the east and the Kamo River in the west. It is filled with shops, restaurants and Ochaya (teahouses).

Before world war 2, japanese was considered under a Showa period. Where it was democratic country. In the movie it was clear that the elite japenese men were doctors, chairmans, war leaders who were treated very highly. making them the people who were able to afford the entertainment of a geisha.

After the defeat in WWII, Japan was occupied by the allied powers and brought upon an end to the emporer's reign and transformed Japan into a democratic country with a constitutional monarchy. In the movie , the alliance with the americans can cleary be visible by the increase of bars and pubs where there were more filled with american soldiers. There were also business alliances going on between the japanese and the americans which sayuri was called to win the heart of the american to make them agree to the business agreement.

794 - the year the conditions of culture of geisha began to emerge. Kyoto become the home of a beauty-obsesses elite. 

Man are not constrained to be faithful to their wives at their period, wifes are taken to be a modest mother and a manager of the home only, and other sexual enjoyment and romantic attachments, men goes to courtesan for it. 

The geisha are usually trained since young, being sent to a geisha school where they were trained on the performances like fan dancing, tea pouring and other art performances.

The geisha are hired to perform fan dancing and tea pouring, later they will be bid between the elite japanese men where the geisha will be assigned to serve the highest bidder. The geisha usually serve the war commanders or samurais.
 in the movie, geisha serves men who were high in position like doctors, chairmans, war leaders most probably due to high in cost.

The house was also very packed and  has a lot of floor,  the frontyard was also very small and only a gate is separating it from the main road outside. 

In the movie, a rich japanese house was also shown, where there was a huge garden with sakura trees all over the garden with lakes and bridges to walk around. The house was similar in terms of the the roof and  walls
