A compromise is when both parties must be willing to give up something of equal value.

Comprising is when each party gives up something it wants resulting in a win-win situation for both parties. It is important that both parties in conflict do not adopt compromise prematurely if collaboration is possible and feasible. For example, nurse Stacy wants to switch shifts with another nurse due to a last minute prior commitment. The other nurse Linda will only take that other Stacy's shift if she also works on another shift where Stacy cannot go to work due to a last minute commitment as well. This way both parties are happy and able to have a day off on the days they want.

Nurse B has several high acuity patients and needs assistance. Nurse A happened to have Nurse B's patient for several days and is well aware of the patient's condition. Both nurses can compromise by Nurse A receiving one of Nurse B's difficult patients, and Nurse B receiving a better manageable patient.

Competing is when one party pursues what it wants at the expense of others (zero sum game). This is a win-lose conflict resolution strategy. For example, a nurse gets special treatment in choosing which holidays to get off by the nurse manager just because she does extra busy work of the manager, and stays overtime to help the nurse manager with tasks. This is unfair to other nurses, every nurse should get fair treatment in which days they wish to not work.
