My voice assistant fails to uphold privacy as it listens in, records and attempts to respond to every voice or speech within my home environment. The voice assistant also fails to uphold equality in it sole use of a female voice, with no option to switch to a male voice where desirable.

To uphold privacy, it would be nice to have the voice assistant notify the user prior to any listening or recording of voice. It should provide capability for a user to give a verbal consent. There should also be an opportunity to withdraw consent.

To uphold equality, it would be nice to have multiple voices comprising male and female tunes, and user should be allowed to decide what voice tune they'd like the device to adapt at every point in time.

IFTTT items

IFTTT is an app, similar to Shortcuts on iOS, where you can automate actions at certain times/actions/sequences. This function is increasingly integrated with IoT items, such as white goods and lighting. As home systems increase in popularity and similar products come on board, more information about humans live will be recorded. More data of daily lives at an individual, regional and national level will form. This opens up many areas which could be taken advantage of, from private firms targeting advertising even more specifically, to law enforcement, and even foreign organisations which can refine how they act on other countries to maximise news releases, specific targeting of citizens, even agressive covert actions. In this sense, national security and individual privacy is intertwined, where the information gathered from users daily schedules and product use needs to be stored at home or encrypted in some form. The depth of data recorded should be anonymised as well. The likelihood of this occurring without regulatory parameters would appear to be rather slim.

Cloud Data Processing

Alexa should uphold privacy. But it records without notice to the end user. For starters, before it records, it should speak out "Alexa is Recording." Like the HP cam example, the mic for Alexa should also have a manual button disable override, and should have a light indicator as well, for transparency to the end-user. Data mining or audio recordings processed in the cloud is a concern which I do not have a solution for as of the moment. This would either be a guarantee of cloud computing security. I mean, if they can encrypt, they should also be able to do it securely for the cloud. Or having higher processing power for the Alexa unit. Which would increase cost.

making the user a co-designer

The value I'd aim to uphold is the right of the user to define their boundaries and values themselves; my version of a personal assistant would not presume what elements were important to the individual. Customisation of data reporting would allow sensitive aspects to be retained 'at the edge' on the user's device, and more generalised data (such as the proportion of time used for activities such as e-reading audiobooks vs web searching, for example) would be aggregated and shared to allow for product development. What it cannot promise is that no profile of a user could be developed that would contain privileged information. The way to manage this is through a data protocol that has independent auditing at its core to ensure that no invasive or improper use can be made of privileged information. This is already a feature of better VPNs and others. The core of the business model would be to provide a service that is data-reliant, but not where the service is provided in order to access a data stream for profit
