There was a day I’ll never forget — we were extremely busy at the time. So many patients kept coming in, and everything felt like it was happening all at once. I was juggling so much, and honestly, I was on the verge of burnout. No time to eat, no time for a bathroom break, not even a moment to drink water.

But then, something beautiful happened. One of my co-workers quietly took over the patients I was supposed to check on and said, “Go take a breather, we’ve got you.” Another stepped in to finish my tasks. Someone even handed me a cup of water with a warm smile — no words, just pure kindness.

It may seem like a small moment, but to me, it meant everything. It reminded me that at Maxicare, we’re not just coworkers — we’re a team, a family. We show up not only for our patients, but for each other.

That day reminded me why I love what I do. The care, compassion, and quiet acts of support here at Maxicare don’t just heal others — they heal us, too. And I’m beyond grateful to be part of this incredible team.

I have been working as a part-time ultrasound technologist reliever for Maxicare for more than a year now (since June 2024 wow) , covering shifts in different branches (RME, BGC, BT, CUBAO, Novaliches) . This opportunity has been very rewarding for me—not only does it provide extra funds, but it also allows me to grow professionally and expand my knowledge in the field.

One of the aspects I enjoy most about this job is the people I work with. The regular technologists I relieve have become my friends even outside of work, which makes working alongside them so much easier and more enjoyable. Through this experience, I have also developed the ability to quickly adapt to different work environments and interact effectively with various types of people, as the role requires me to move between multiple locations.

I also appreciate how supportive the HR team has been. They handle my requests efficiently, especially on days when they are in urgent need of a technologist. Their willingness to compromise and make arrangements that work for both sides has made my experience with Maxicare even more positive.

Lastly, compared to other part-time jobs, Maxicare truly stands out in how they care for their relievers. They provide clear instructions on protocols, ensure we are treated well, and make sure we never feel out of place—in my experience, I’ve always felt valued and respected as part of the team.

Unang Duty bilang isang Rehistradong Nars

First time ko mag-relieve sa Maxicare Clinic, and to be honest, kabado talaga ako noong una. I didn’t know anyone, and I wasn’t familiar with their system. I kept thinking, “Kaya ko ba ‘to?” Pero sa unang araw pa lang, naramdaman ko na agad ‘yung magaan at positive environment.

Hindi naging madali syempre, everything was new as usual in a new place, new faces, and new routines. But what made a huge difference was the people around me. The nurses and staff were so welcoming and supportive. They didn’t treat me like a stranger or just a reliever passing through rather they treated me like part of the team. They patiently guided me, offered help without hesitation, and made sure I was never left behind. Eventually, I found friends among them, and work became lighter and even enjoyable.

What truly touched my heart, though, were the patients.

The teamwork I witnessed at Maxicare was exceptional. Everyone helped each other. No one hesitated to lend a hand. It’s that kind of collaboration and genuine concern for both patients and colleagues that makes Maxicare Clinic stand out. It’s not just about the name. it’s about the people who work together with heart, every single day.

Sa maikling panahon na nandoon ako, hindi lang ako natuto. I was reminded of the kind of nurse I always wanted to be like a compassionate, collaborative, and committed. I may have come as a reliever, but I left with a heart full of gratitude and a deeper love for this profession.

Rekindling My First Love—with Maxicare!

As cliché as it may sound, my journey with Maxicare began in January 2024 when I stepped into the world of healthcare as a Nurse Reliever. It marked the start of something incredibly meaningful—what I now consider the rekindling of my first love: Nursing.

I had the privilege to rotate across several Maxicare Primary Care Clinics—VV Soliven, Double Dragon, Centris, Malate—but it was PCC Hemady that became my home. Each site taught me something new, but it was in Hemady where I found not just coworkers, but family.

In these past few months, I have experienced a wide spectrum of human emotions, and every one of them left an impact. I have had patients smile with gratitude and thank me with tears in their eyes. However, I have also experienced the more difficult moments—times that tested my strength and empathy.

I have been shouted at by a patient battling cancer, who, through no fault of their own, was overwhelmed by pain and fear. I have been on the receiving end of harsh words from patients who arrived late and were upset about being rescheduled. I have encountered patients who refused to be triaged, those who grew impatient at long queues, and others who grew frustrated trying to register at the kiosk—some angry, some confused, some just trying to be heard. Each encounter came with its lesson in patience, compassion, and humility.

However, despite the emotional toll these moments can bring, they also deepened my purpose because behind every angry word is someone in need of care, of understanding, of help. Moreover, to be in a position to offer that, even in small ways, is something I will never take for granted.

I was never alone in navigating these challenges. I found strength in the people around me—my PCC Hemady family. From Chief, our ever-reliable security guard, to our hardworking housekeepers, our kind and efficient Customer Care Representatives (CCRs), our wise and dedicated doctors, and my fellow nurses, every single one of them contributed to a working environment filled with empathy, strength, and love.

A special thanks goes to our heads, Ma’am Maricris and Ma’am Annaliza, whose guidance and steady leadership anchored me. However, the heart of this team extends beyond nursing. I am grateful to work alongside our committed Medical Technologist, precise and calm under pressure; our dependable Radiologic Technologist, who treats every patient with dignity; our gentle and skilled Ultrasound Technician, whose voice alone can calm anxious hearts; and our patient and knowledgeable 2D Echo Technician, who ensures every procedure is handled with both care and professionalism. Together, we move with a shared mission—to serve.

In August 2024, I began a new chapter: medical school. I became a 1st-year student, full of dreams and uncertainty. However, when the school break arrived in May 2025, I returned to Maxicare—not just to work, but to reconnect with my first love. What made it even more fulfilling was knowing that while others rested, I spent my break doing something that made a real difference.

This school break became one of the most meaningful and joyful times of my life. Because every day I get to help someone, to listen, to care, to be present. It was not just work—it was purpose in action.

Now, as I prepare to return to school this August as a 2nd-year medical student, I bring all of this with me: the lessons, the heartbreaks, the growth, and the love. These experiences shaped not just the nurse in me, but the future doctor I hope to become.

Moreover, while this chapter closes for now, my heart is filled with hope that I will be able to return, surrounded by the same love, warmth, and support that have made every single day in Hemady worthwhile.

To my PCC Hemady family: I worked with you for three months last year, and two more this year. In those five months, you did not just welcome me—you shaped me. You gave me courage, reminded me of my worth, and allowed me to grow into the healthcare professional I aspire to be.

A patient once said I was “sweet, accommodating, lovely, and very helpful.” I hold onto that not as a compliment, but as a reflection of the people who made me this way. Because PCC Hemady molded me into someone better, kinder, and stronger.

Thank you, Maxicare, for the trust and opportunity. For allowing me to serve, to learn, and to fall in love again with this noble calling.

This is more than a profession. This is my calling. This is my first love.

Moreover, thanks to all of you, this is my home.

Every time I step into the clinic, I remind myself that being present even as a reliever can truly make a difference.

There was one shift when the clinic was unusually busy. Despite being new to the team, I felt the genuine support from my fellow nurses. They didn’t treat me like “just a reliever” they made me feel like I belonged. We worked together, covered each other, and still found time to share a few laughs. That day reminded me why I chose this profession: not just to care for patients, but to be part of a team that uplifts one another.

The positive atmosphere and teamwork helped me push through exhaustion and give my best. And that feeling of being valued and supported is something I’ll carry with me on every duty.

💙 To all my fellow relievers, keep showing up with heart. We may only be there temporarily, but our impact can be lasting.

“If it scares you, pursue it more”

That’s the quote that went through my head when I saw an opening for a Nurse Reliever at PCC CDO. I felt like that was the sign for me to take the risk and do something that scares me. But the moment I walked through the doors of the clinic, I was welcomed by a welcoming, enthusiastic, and supportive group of nurses — and I knew deep in my heart that I belonged. As someone who has never had any work experience, I never felt alone since the staff were always willing to patiently guide me every step of the way. Even when it gets tough especially during busy days at the clinic each member of the team pours their heart and soul into their work. It made me realize that kindness and compassion goes a long way, something that can brighten someone’s day or make it a little bit easier. The PCC CDO team has not only been my mentors as I grow as a nurse but an inspiration to always serve the community with an open heart.
