Overview

Konnevesi is a very small municipality (about 2500 inhabitants). All the shops, banks and restaurants are on the same street. Lots of beautiful nature (forests and lakes). Konnevesi national park is right around the corner. Our school is known for outdoor courses, mathematics (natural sciences) VR-technology.

Location: 60km to Jyväskylä, 110km to Kuopio, 340km to Helsinki, 220km to Tampere. The public traffic between Konnevesi and Jyväskylä is possible by bus a few times per day. The nearest railway stations are in Hankasalmi, Suonenjoki and Jyväskylä.

We provide study lines in outdoor and mathematics (natural sciences). Erasmus + is starting this fall. 

Outdoor courses: trekking in Konnevesi and in Lapland (both fall and winter). 

Mathematics study line: possibility to study more natural sciences and study courses from Jyväskylä university. 

We have four seasons. In the summer it gets hot (+ 28 degrees) and in the winter it gets cold (-20 degrees).

Overview

Kuhmoinen Upper Secondary School is a small school of about 40 students, half of whom usually come from elsewhere. The beginning of the year orientation is an important part in creating a friendly environment and strong team spirit. There are also student mentors assigned to each international student in order to further facilitate their integration into our school. During the year, the students themselves organize school-wide events and after-school activities. The teacher coordinators provide additional support and ensure that no one is left outside the group. We also encourage students to create their own get-togethers and events.

The municipality of Kuhmoinen is located in the Pirkanmaa region in Central Finland. Kuhmoinen experiences the average Finnish weather: Autumn is usually on the warmer side, ranging from 5 to 10 degrees Celsius with occasional rain and sleet before actual permanent snow. The Finnish ruska (change of color of foliage and leaves from green to orange, yellow and red) is exceptional and can best be experienced in Isojärvi National Park, which is located in Kuhmoinen. In the wintertime, the average temperature is 5 to 10 degrees Celsius below freezing with some warmer and colder days and weeks in between. Snowfall is common. The winter weather provides excellent possibilities for skiing, skating and other winter activities. The early night fall creates a possibility to witness the Aurora Borealis or the northern lights. In the spring, the weather gets increasingly warmer by the day, and the day gets longer with earlier sunrise and later sunset. In the summer there are usually more sunny and warm days than rainy days with the average temperature ranging from 18 to 25 degrees Celsius. The hottest days are suitable for swimming in one of the many lakes in Kuhmoinen. The nightless night is at its best in mid-June. Kuhmoinen and its surrounding nature provide an energizing environment for nature-loving people.

In the Finnish school system, each student is monitored throughout their school career by their classroom teacher, special education teacher, and subject teachers. If the need arises, the teachers provide additional help such as extra classes after school for revision and in-class support such as notes and other support materials, different learning styles and personal guidance. Furthermore, the special education teacher has the opportunity to participate in the in-class learning process and also to teach students in need of support independently or in small groups. Special education teacher gives tips and guidance to teachers and supports the students and their teachers when in need. Our school also has an extra teacher who acts as a second teacher when needed. This provides additional support in class and also in smaller study groups.

In upper secondary school there is less hands-on support from the special education teacher and more one-on-one support from the subject teacher or the extra teacher. If needed, the extra teacher can form a study group or give extra classes to support students. Also, the students themselves study together and support each other. Furthermore, the student counsellor helps students navigate the Finnish upper secondary school courses and find ways to study and progress in a meaningful way.

Location

The municipality of Kuhmoinen is located in the middle of the Finnish countryside with nature’s best resources around, such as Lake Päijänne, Isojärvi National Park and countless forests, lakes and recreational areas, beaches and parks. Kuhmoinen Upper Secondary school has its own gym located on the school grounds free of charge for students. Kuhmoinen also has a disc golf course, a Padel court, a mini-golf course, a paintball course and a track and field stadium. About 700 meters from the school, the Kirjonurmen talli stables provide horseback riding classes.

Kuhmoinen centre has within a one kilometre radius two grocery stores, a small movie theatre, a library, a pharmacy, a healthcare centre, some restaurants and bars, local churches, small shops and boutiques, and the small Kuhmoisten satama harbour bustling with life especially in the summer time. The buses go from Jyväskylä to Lahti and onwards (north-south direction) and to Tampere (west) via Kuhmoinen. The nearest train stations are in Jämsä (40 kilometres north) and Lahti (80 kilometres south).

Finland has thirteen universities of which Universities of Jyväskylä, Tampere and Helsinki are the closest and most popular to Kuhmoinen Upper Secondary School graduates. However, students from Kuhmoinen Upper Secondary School continue their studies at all Finnish universities. We do cooperate with University of Jyväskylä with some introductory courses and student visits. Depending on the year, there is additional cooperation with academic speakers that visit our school, as well as online streams and more.

Expenses

Each international student at Kuhmoinen Upper Secondary School receives a tuition-free education that includes free school meals every school day and an afternoon snack during long school days, study materials such as a laptop, books and e-books, and all other support that every Finnish student receives. Furthermore, each international student is assigned a Finnish student mentor to help navigate the Finnish school and free time. The school provides mental health support, health care and study counselling.

Accommodation

The municipality of Kuhmoinen provides a shared apartment for 3 to 4 students. The private sector apartments and municipality apartments are mainly located in the municipality centre 1 to 2 kilometres away from the school, and also some near the health care station 1 to 2 kilometres from the centre and 3 to 4 kilometres from the school. Everything is near, within a few hundred meters to a few kilometres.

The apartment rent in Kuhmoinen varies from 300 euros upwards depending on location, size, age, and even less with roommates. They are all fully functioning apartments with kitchens, bathrooms and other usual accommodations. Most apartments also have their own or a shared sauna.

Study lines

General study line and Horseback riding line

Ratsastuslinja or Horseback riding special program/study line, where up to 28 ECTS of facultative studies can be filled with riding lessons and theory lessons. All obligatory upper secondary school courses are the same as in the general study line. The school provides support with a teacher tutor. The lessons are held in the nearby Kirjonurmen talli stables, whose owners act as teachers.

The horseback riding students have the possibility to participate in riding competitions, the Helsinki International Horse Show and other horse fairs as well as receive coaching lessons from outside experts. Riding lessons twice a week are free of charge, and additional lessons are at a discount. The lessons consist of theory (horse breeding, healthcare, nutrition and other) and practical lessons with feeding, grooming and riding.

To enroll, the student must have previous riding experience, i.e., they can independently ride with the usual gaits (walk, trot, gallop, canter and pace). It is possible to attain said level by participating in a beginner horseback riding class in Kirjonurmen talli stables during the summer, paid by the student.

Modern facilities and well-equipped learning environments, well-arranged services, individual support, small to medium-sized study groups, international studies, entrepreneurship, and a safe and peaceful community, located by the sea on the west coast of Finland.

Typical coastal weather in Finland. In four different seasons (each ca. 3 months), the temperature can vary between -25° to + 30°C. The warm summertime in Finland is from June to August, and the coldest wintertime is from December to February.

Merikarvia is a small and peaceful municipality of ca. 3000 citizens on the west coast of Finland. Our school is located at the very center of Merikarvia. In the vicinity, we have grocery stores (two supermarkets), a public library, a pharmacy, a health care center, several sports facilities, and apartments that the students can rent, and they are all located within a short walking distance from the school. Students can dine at the school restaurant (free meals during the school days). Public transportation is usually not needed, because distances are very short and many of the services are located nearby. If you want to travel farther or visit other cities it is possible to use a bus or travel by bus to the nearest bigger city (Pori), and continue by train. Study line: General study line

Standard Finnish high school curriculum. Added to that, we have interesting optional courses such as international studies, entrepreneurship, and high school diplomas (arts, music, sports and domestic science). We have also two lines of study, which are: Science & technology, and Medical sciences & healthcare. By choosing them, the students can strengthen their skills for further studies in these fields.

All our students follow the standard Finnish high school curriculum. But added to that, they can also choose more optional courses, participate in projects and enroll in our lines of study, where they can deepen their understanding of these fields, and pursue subjects that they are especially interested in.

Requirement

GPA (GPA equivalent from Good to Excellent. As in the Finnish system, grades 7-10 on a grade scale of 4-10)

Motivation Letter

Students are required to have a motivation letter and participate in an entrance interview. In addition, they can voluntarily make a motivational video, in which they can demonstrate their Finnish language skills which are important to be at a certain level to be accepted.

You can contact the school, and we can help to arrange the accommodation. However, the school does not own the apartments or sign the contracts. The apartments are owned by the municipality of Merikarvia, or by private owners and we can help you negotiate and sign the lease agreements with them.

The students can, for example, share a single or two-room apartment with another student if they want to. We have also planned a welcome program and guided support for living at the beginning. Continued support is provided as needed (friendly instructor/tutor who is in charge of guiding the students in everyday matters).

Other

We have cooperated with many high schools and universities in other European countries, and done common projects with them. We plan to continue our international co-operation and decide on a yearly basis which new project will be started. These projects are voluntary for the students. If the project demands traveling, in some projects there might be some costs for the participating student (for example flights or accommodation).

After graduating from high school, students typically apply and continue to Finnish universities like the University of Tampere, the University of Turku, Satakunta University for Applied Sciences (SAMK), Aalto University, etc.

We do our best to ensure that all our students have the necessary support and counseling regarding their studies. If the student wants to succeed and is willing to focus on his/her studies and work towards his/her goals, we will work together with the student, and provide as much support as we can.

Our school is quite small, and the students will get familiar with each other quickly. Teachers and counselors are also easy to approach and will arrange chances to get along with Finnish students. We can also have an orientation day, or arrange, for instance, more events and plan them together with the students.

Overview 

In our school you can study in multiple ways and choose for instance preparatory courses in medicine and also art, music and sports. There is a large number of courses available at Mänttä High School for art, music and sports. How would it sound to have for instance ice hockey and boxing connected to your studies, playing in bands or studying and making art? 

You can choose versatile courses in art and music and study at the Top Sports Academy at Mänttä High School. In art, we work together with the Autere Adult Education Centre, the Serlachius Museum and Mänttä Art Festival. The Merikanto Music Institution is our partner in music and in sports we work with SASKY (Municipal Education and Training Consortium) and with the local sports clubs.

You can find a pleasant library at our school where you can study and spend your breaks. There is also a small kitchen meant for the students.

All the high school students receive a laptop, digital studying material and school books at the beginning of their studies. The school also serves a free lunch every school day.

The Art Town of Mänttä-Vilppula is a lively small town in Pirkanmaa, about 90 kilometres from Tampere and Jyväskylä. Our town has culture and art, beautiful nature and plenty of opportunities for hobbies.

Our students have done well in the matriculation examination through the years. In many subjects, when comparing high schools, we are above the national average. Your success at school is extremely important for us. Thus our teachers and student counsellor offer you continuous guidance with your studies and help you plan your course selection depending on your future studies.

We work with multiple different higher education partners so you can take orientation studies, university courses and study units already while studying at the high school. These are accepted as a part of your upper secondary degree.

Về chương trình học

-Ngoài chương trình như thường, trường còn cung cấp hai khóa học demo khác nhau về khoa học tự nhiên. Các khóa học này được tổ chức tại Trạm nghiên cứu Konnevesi của Đại học Jyväskylä và sinh viên sẽ ở đó trong hai ngày. Nhà trường lo chi phí. Trong khóa học đi bộ đường dài, học sinh sẽ tham quan công viên quốc gia hoặc tuyến đường đi bộ đường dài. Trường cũng cung cấp các chuyến đi xe buýt. Trong các khóa học này, học sinh học được nhiều điều về khoa học và tự nhiên.

Our school is well-known for its excellent academic achievements. We have ranked top among the smaller-sized upper-secondary schools. Everybody knows one another and taking care of matters is simple.

We have a typical continental climate. The average temperature in January - February is about -10 degrees Celsius. Kainuu region is one of the snowiest parts of Finland during the winter season. The average temperature in July is about 16 degrees Celsius.

Expenses

Paltamon Lukio is located in the center and services are very close by. The health care center is under a kilometer away and stores are near as well. We have our own gym which is free to use for our students. The dormitory is located about a kilometer away from our school so everything is near.

One-bedroom apartment is 300 euros per month, a two-bedroom apartment is 450 euros per month and a three-room apartment is 700 euros per month.

Accommodation

Apartments are one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom apartments.

The Housing Company is in charge of providing students with accommodation. Since there's a cultural difference, please make sure students can live with someone at the beginning phase rather than alone as well as they are separated according to their gender.

Study line: Our Upper Secondary is a general upper secondary school.

We have had exchange students from Belgium, Germany, Austria, and the USA.

We have no tuition, we offer free laptops, lunch, learning materials, textbooks, an e-learning environment, and student health care. The school will assign a tutor for students.

We offer remedial instruction and support.

We have a student body and events organized at school and in a small school, it is easy to get to know new people. We also have Erasmus+ projects in our school.

Accommodation is possible in a shared flat. Everybody has an own room and the kitchen and bathroom are shared. The flat is furnished. It takes 10 minutes to walk to the school from the flat. The rent is 150 euros per month. The students may take extra lunches from the school kitchen for the evening and for weekends.

The school days are from 8.00 am to 2.00 pm. After the school day you may join to the music theater lessons as an actor (acting, singing and dancing three times a week) or a musician in the orchestra (once a week) if you want. Also it is possible to study studio technology after the school day. These studies are also free for our students. Gym, indoor ice rink and sports field are nearby as well as jogging, skiing and skating routes. Gym is free for the new students. The indoor ice rink has a small cost (2eur/time). There is a youth house in the village center to spend time together. It is also possible for a student to get financial support for one chargeable hobby in Rantasalmi.

Every graduated student will receive a grant of 500 euros from the local education foundation.

It is possible to travel to Rantasalmi by bus. The nearest cities (Savonlinna and Varkaus) locate 42 kilometres away from our municipality.

Pyhäjoen Lukio (Pyhäjoki Upper Secondary School) has an entrepreneurial profile although the curriculum follows the national approach. The school is relatively small - only about a hundred students and twelve teachers - but it has an active role in the community through the preparation and distribution of the local paper. The school's main aim is to educate by offering the students possibilities in learning by doing and challenging their own learning strategies. Writing newspaper articles, designing and marketing advertisements, and producing the layout of the weekly newspaper is a part of the school curriculum. It works as a recruitment tool for the wider regional area for future students. The entrepreneurial spirit is also evident in the organization of the annual Autumn Fair - Messut - in September. It is entirely prepared and managed by second-year students and visited by around 1,500 people annually. 

We have fairly defined seasons in Finland. Although the Baltic Sea warms the coastal climate, the winters are dark and cold with the lowest temperatures at - 25 Celsius. The spring and autumn temperatures vary between -5 and + 15. The summer is temperate with long hours of sunlight.

Pyhäjoki lies about 100 kilometers from Oulu and the nearest airport. It takes approximately an hour to drive from Oulu to Pyhäjoki. 

The center of Pyhäjoki is very compact with the health center, restaurants, food stores, and accommodations within a walking distance of the school.

You do not need to choose your study lines in Pyhäjoen lukio when you apply.  As a student, however, you can specialize in natural sciences as we provide extra courses in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry or Media as we provide courses in newspapers layout design and video streaming. We also offer a driver's license as a part of the school curriculum.

There is a lot of emphasis on international cooperation and possibilities to travel within the Erasmus+ system and the Physics group makes a yearly study trip to an advanced scientific central either in Lund, Hamburg, or Geneva.

We have a special orientation program for all the new students during the first 8 weeks. We have a tutoring group of students to help incomers. There is an international club meeting each week.

We currently offer several possibilities for international study via Erasmus+ cooperation. These consist of either group mobilities or individual mobilities in several European countries. 

The nearest university is Oulu University. We have several cooperation projects with them, especially in the natural sciences 

You are most welcome to study at Puolanka High School. Puolanka is a small but cozy municipality located in the upper Kainuu region. The town has approximately 2 500 inhabitants and the same amount of summer residents. Puolanka’s landscape is shaped with lakes and hills offering a perfect background for outdoor activities in all seasons. A new sports hall guarantees high-quality standards for indoor training and team sports.

Living at Puolanka is easy. All the basic needs are easily at hand and there are daily bus connections to Kajaani, the regional capital of Kainuu.

Puolanka High School has been selected as the best small high school in Kainuu (region) and the second-best small high school in all of Finland (2020). Relatively small group sizes guarantee personal and specific teaching for all our students.

In 2022-2023 High school has 30 students, so students and teachers alike get to know each other very well during their studies here. Active student union organizes various events so there's a lot of happening inside the school days and free time as well. 

Our high school offers numerous benefits for students. Welcome to Pello, a small town on the border of Sweden. Pellon lukio (Pello high school) operates in a new building called Meän Opinahjo. In the same building also operates our primary school, and the communal nursery school. Pello is a community of 30 to 40 students and 12 to14 teachers. All students study in Finnish.

Our General Upper Secondary School Programme offers quality teaching and our teachers support the students on their way to the Finnish matriculation examination (ie. the A-level tests) but also on their way to applying into universities and further studies after high school. Study groups are small, about 10 to 15 students. In our small high school, teaching is individualized and support for learning is easily available.

The Finnish upper secondary school curriculum is spanned over three years, but for foreign students the study duration will be longer, four years, due to the fact that the studies are conducted in Finnish and the final exam, the Matriculation Examination, must be done in Finnish. High school studies build on the curriculum of the Finnish basic education. The minimum number of study points is 150 for high school studies.

In Pello we have multiple hobbies to choose from in our freetime. For example, the local community (called Meän Opisto) offers you the possibility to learn to play some instrument, or take a handicraft or dancing course. If you like to spend time outdoors, you can go skiing, snowmobiling, taking a bicycle ride, fishing or hiking. It's also possible to play frisbee golf and do archery.
