Use Good Tone

Good tone is critical with electronic writing. The wrong words can leave a bad impression and upset the reader; especially with emails and in online classrooms. It is easy to sound bossy and unprofessional with persuasive messages, and since most situations are asynchronous, you do not have the opportunity to immediately respond or allow the audience to see body language or hear the tone of your voice. Always check your writing to ensure it is polite and neutral regarding requests and conveying information. An email with good tone can accomplish much more than one that is overbearing and with the "me" attitude. Remember, the "you" attitude is a good way to convey your messages with good tone.

When a good tone is used the reader will get a better look at you as a person. If a disagreement is being discussed the manner in which the writer is writing will show the amount of professionalism the write has and it will matter. Using a good tone when filling out any type of application will also help you have a better shot at getting the job, or into the college of your choice.

Using good tone is always good to teach children. They love using all CAPS and trying to get their point across that way but that does not help their professionalism at all. Students need to be aware what using a good tone looks like. They need to know what words to not use when writing out applications or a resume. This will help them throughout their whole life.

Internet Messages are Permanent

When writing anything on the internet it is very important to understand that everything you put out there is out there for good. There is no way to take off what you have written. Sometimes out of anger we can lash out and write something hurtful and then after feel bad and regretful. There is no way to take back the words only try to fix what you have done. Sometimes it is best to just walk away from a heated moment and breathe before responding. This will ensure that the words you say will not hurt the other person.

Everyone can see what you post whether it be a Facebook status or a Tweet, only put out things that you want other people to read. If the wrong things get out you may be penalized and hurt over them. If a boss sees that you are writing negative things about him or his business you could be fired and that could ultimately hurt you in the end.

Young students need to be taught this because when you are 13 years old it is not that easy to just walk away and think about the message you really want to portray. They will want to just live in the moment and say what they need to and it will ultimately hurt them in the end. This is something that should be taught a lot and brought up often.

Keep the size of files small

Most people do not have a lot of time to be waiting for long files to download to their computer. They will probably just delete it before it even gets open if its to big. Keep things to a minimum. Write what needs to be written, stay away from over doing it. When a boss is reading a resume they only give each one maybe 10-15 seconds and then move to the next. If they are not wowed in that amount of time you will not be selected for that job. Same goes with a college application, there are many people trying out for the same thing so you want to be short and sweet when applying.

Teaching students that size does matter when writing documents is very important. When you are younger you always feel like you need to add fluff and make things see larger, to make yourself look smarter. When in reality this is not what you are portraying at all. Teaching them this technique when they are younger will be beneficial as they get older and will help them greatly when they are filling out applications.

This is a lesson that is very important for any age range. Children are so naïve when they first start using the internet. They need to realize that the things they put out on the internet will follow them forever. When they are having an argument on Facebook for everyone to see is not the best idea. Taking a step back when heated and really thinking about what they are saying is very important. As they get older they will want to build relationships with people that will help them to get jobs, and even into college when it is time. If there are many negative things said about your character this may hurt your chances of getting the things you want in life.

The internet is a very powerful tool. It needs to be used delicately and only put out the things you are ok with the world seeing.

Always use good grammar and correct spelling. Poor grammar and miss-spelled words are unprofessional and reflect poorly on you and your message. A suggestion is to type your message or information into Microsoft word, apply the spell and grammar checker, make changes, hen copy and paste the text to your communication source. Take the tome to ensure your audience does not have to read a poorly written message with typos.

Using correct spelling and grammar is a direct reflection on you as a person. When filling out your college application or a resume for a job, the person reading it is going to notice and incorrect grammar and will dock you immediately. It is very important to read over and fix and corrections that are needed. You will have a greater chance at succeeding in the job you want or the college you are trying to get into if you have minimal correction to be made.

This is something that every student should be taught because it is so important. Children depend so much on the small word lingo that they forget what a real letter written to someone should look like. I feel that some children are so into gaming and texting they do not even know how to have an intelligent conversation. How are they going to fill out college applications.

When sending an e-mail or writing a comment on social media it is always important to remember that people are not seeing you and do not know the tone you are trying to use. When e-mailing your boss a response to a complaint you may be aggravated and just shoot off whatever you are thinking; this will get you fired.

It is a good idea to write what you want and then read it aloud to yourself. Maybe let a friend or a parent read it and make sure you are sending the right kind of message.

Using the wrong tone can change the whole game. You could not be accepted to your favorite college because on your application you are sounding snotty and like a know it all, and they want their college students to b well rounded and liked by all. Someone could not get the job they are really wanting and had their heart set on if they are rude and condescending on their resume.

It is always a good idea to really think about what you are always putting out there. The wrong message could really hurt you.
