1. Lysistrata wants to make all the women in Greece to abandon sex. Sex was an important part of life in ancient Greece, for both men and women and she believed if women stopped their husbands from touching them in sexual ways, tempted them but completely rejected their desires to have sex, they would be able to put an end to the war.

2. Athens is at war with Sparta.

3. Lampito (a Spartan) is the first woman that agrees to go along with Lysistrata’s plan. I believe this is because she is physically viewed as a very powerful woman as we see from when she is first introduced - “… such rippling muscles! Why, I bet you could throttle a bull.” but she might fear that if she shows signs of weakness i.e. getting tearful, she might lose that image of her. She wants to seem as the most brave and important and it seems as if Lysistrata is aware of this because once the other woman start turning away, Lampito is the first person she asks to join her. Lampito wanting to look fearless, agrees with her plan saying that they must have peace.

4. Menelaus was a king of Sparta in Greek mythology, husband of Helen. Helen’s stepfather, Tyndareus, was the king of Sparta until him and his wife Leda decided to step down, passing the thrown down to Menelaus and Helen.

5. Pherecrates was a Greek poet of Athenian old comedy. He was especially famous for his inventive imagination.

6. Aeschylus is often recognised as the father of tragedy, and is the first of the three early Greek tragedians whose plays survive extant.

7. Myrrhine’s words “white stallion” and “isn’t it a whopper?” both could be taken for sexual innuendos for a penis.

8. “And how sweet it smells forby, by Castor”

In Greek and Roman mythology, Castor and Pollux were twin brothers who appeared in several prominent myths. The twins were worshiped as gods who helped shipwrecked sailors and who brought favourable winds for those who made sacrifices to them.
She could be referring to this myth and how the smell is soothing and somehow reminds her of Castor?

[[attached is questions]]
