“I told you,” he said, his head tilted, his eyes smiling. “You don't know about families yet.” He leaned back against the snowmobile. “He knew the accident was my fault.”

I sighed. “It was my fault.” “Everything has to be your fault all the time? I shrugged a little. “After the accident, Pop said they'd told him you never stayed in one place very long. But he said we were different, and that it must be something else. And that's what it was? You thought—” “I messed up the family.” “Wait till he hears this,” Steven said. “Just wait.” - Chapter 16, Pictures of Hollis Woods.

How does this relate to the theme?
This relates to the theme because Hollis blamed herself for Steven getting hurt after a big accident with the Regan family, and she thought she ruined the family because of it. The accident was not her fault, but she still blamed herself for the nasty accident. She thought that everything bad that happened was her fault. Steven was telling her not to blame herself for this because it was not her fault.

"The Old Man hadn't been happy with him (Steven) all week. Nothing gigantic; little stuff. I could see the anger in his eyes. “You're good enough for both of us,” he had said. “That's what Pop would say.” I leaned forward. “Is it me?” I asked. “My fault?” He had laughed then. “Don't be silly.” Still, I wasn't sure. I opened my mouth to tell him about me, a mountain of trouble" - Pictures of Hollis Woods, Ninth picture

How does this relate to the theme?
This relates to the theme because Mr. Regan, also known as the old man, was not happy with Steven over such insignificant things. In Hollis' mind, it was her fault that they argued. Even when Steven told her that it wasn't her fault, she still didn't believe him. She thought everything wrong that happened in her life was caused by her, even when it wasn't. Although she wanted them happy, it was hard. Despite not causing any harm, she blamed herself. Additionally, she overthought, as if she was tearing the family apart. Since she thought she was a mountain of trouble, she never thought she would be adopted into their family, which shows she shouldn't blame herself when things turn wrong.

"She wouldn't have been surprised at the trouble I had caused. She would have seen it coming. Would Steven have driven the truck to the top of the mountain if I hadn't been there? And the arguing between Steven and the Old Man—what had Izzy said? “Worse this summer. I'd messed up the whole family. Before it was light I packed my things in the backpack. They didn't all fit, so I left a small pile of odds and ends, and the bathing suit that was drying on the line. I tore off a sheet of paper from my drawing pad and wrote the note: It was my fault, all of it. I wanted to see the mountain. I'm going back to Long Island. Please don't come after me. I don't want to be a family after all." - Pictures of Hollis Woods, Twelfth Picture

How does this relate to the theme?
This relates to the theme because when Hollis and steven got into a truck crash, Hollis thought it was her fault, and she thought she messed up the family because of how much they were arguing. She thought it was her fault and that she was tearing this family apart when she entered it. She decided to leave the house to make it easier for everyone, and to stop bringing bad luck, even though none of the things that happened was her fault, or because of her. Even though she wanted to go up the mountain, Steven took the car and used it irresponsibly, so he crashed it. Hollis took the blame, and she got so guilty she ran away from their house and tried to stay away from the Regans because of this situation, which she did not need to do because the Regans were not mad at her, and she did not cause any problems.
