1793 (-1800's): Invention of Cotton Gin & It's Impacts

This paved the way for mass production of goods. Slaves once worked for hours upon hours plucking the seeds from cotton. Which was soon changed with the invention of a machine that can clean 50 lbs of cotton in the SAME time it took to do 1 lb by hand. This invention was important because this made cotton the nations leading cash crop, and increased slave labor demand.

American settlements were scattered around a big territory, this was from the Atlantic Ocean (east) to Mississippi River (west). Most people were farmers because it was the nations most important economic aspect, they would farm for themselves and families. If they were to have a large amount of crops, they would sell to nearby towns or cities. There were very few roads linking towns, and cities were experiencing extreme weather conditions (dry heat, and bad swamps), so most traveling was done on bodies of water. There was little to know industries, farmers made own clothing and tools. Others would make clothes by hand in small workshops and factories were not a thing yet so there were very few spinning mills.

The Second Great Awakening was when American Protestant Chrisitans increasingly began to gain more interest and excitement over their religion. This caused increases in church memberships (Methodists and Baptists). This stimulated moral reforms (temperance and emancipation of women). The Second Great Awakening founded colleges, seminaries, and mission societies.

This was a land deal between the U.S. and France, where U.S. gained land west of the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. Americans were upset over this because they thought the country did not need more undeveloped land, and others believed it was unconstitutional (constitution doesnt give president power to purchase territoy). This purchase doubled the size of the U.S., strengthened the country, gave power to the western expansion, and confirmed the implied powers list.

1814-rest of century: Rise of mass production and factory system/"Mill girls"

Mass production is large quanties of product being made in factories. Mass production began with industralization. Many people wanted this because with machines doing the work, its much more effecient. The factory system was created by Frances Lowell. He had his own factory with a series of machines kept in one building, that turned raw cotton into cloth. He had women from farms come and tend to the machines, they were known as the "Mill girls". The factory system was important because it creates large amounts of a certain product for consumption across the country. This changed the U.S. to a market economy, no longer having to make your own things.

At the beginning of the construction of the Erie canal, most canals were 2-3 miles long. But that was not the case with the Erie, it was 363 miles, it linked to Hudson River to Lake Erie. This canal was needed for the transportation of goods from NYC to Midwest river, through the canal and onto the Great Lakes. This helped New York become the most successfull and biggest city in America, this then prompted many other canals in America.

Women, slaves, and native americans were not allowed to vote. Very rarely free African American men were able to vote. The Democratic party began to rise with Secret paper votes which were starting to change the public vote system, this helped people vote without fear.

The Indian Removal Act was a law passed by congress in 1830, this was passed to authorize the forcing of resettling Indian tribes living east of Mississippi to west of Mississippi, which was then labeled Indian Territory. Some Natives brought it in legally, and Jackson rejected it. Those who resisted with arms, were wiped out by the troops. But eventually all of the tribes resisting were forced to leave. The Trail of Tears is an example of one of the forced migrations, Cherokees were on the journey to Indian Territory. On their journey, 4,000/17,000 died due to harsh winter weather, starvation, and disease. This is important because we wouldnt have nearly any of the land we have now if it werent for the Indian Removal.
