I feel like ECEs have options regarding job security. We have options with school boards, child care centres, and self-employment opportunities with home centres. The government is also paying for some people to complete the ECE program due to shortages and the expected influx in registration when childcare becomes $10 per day and is more affordable for many families. Where PATH comes into play is how we stand out among applicants to get the positions we want. Being our authentic selves when connecting about employment is very important. Many people do whatever they feel they need to to get a job, but to be able to adhere to PATH guidelines in the classroom we need to treat them as rules for life. Being authentic in our employment connections will allow us to find a place where our teaching styles and perspectives are respected. No one wants to work for a company that doesn't value what we do and how we approach our work.

I think that it depends on the city and it depends on the worker. I've worked in childcare for about five years now and I've worked in both Toronto and Guelph and found that Guelph is much easier for me to both find and retain a job. Part of the reason I'm getting my ECE diploma now is because this will open up more job opportunities for me in bigger cities as they often won't even interview you unless you are a registered ECE worker. I think it's so important to be passionate about working with children and to find joy everyday, while also being able to acknowledge that we are humans too and money, and bills, and rent and job security are a large part of our life. Hopefully, in the future, there will be more jobs available and more opportunities for people to either receive training in the field (like a mentorship situation) or have help to be able to pay the way through schooling (such as some of the government programs are doing). I think it's important that ECE workers are able to talk about their struggles and ask for time off or things that would help to benefit their mental and physical health since this will only help to make us more capable in our abilities to support our children. I think, beyond having recruitment programs, it will be great for childcare centers to focus, not only on the needs of the children, but the educators as well. This can help prevent burnout and make worker retention much higher, plus give us a more sure sense of job security.

I personally feel confident in the field. I see how understaffed childcare is. I know personally, my site always struggles to keep people as there is a high burn out rate. I know other sites experience the same. I believe that if you are (PATH) authentic, you will always find an opportunity. Childcare is a career that expects care and compassion. Authenticity with that, will always open a door. Wait lists are long as ever, centres are always looking for more help.
