This refers to a socio-cultural and literary theory and a shift in perspective that has manifested in a variety of disciplines including the social sciences, art, architecture, literature, fashion, communications, and technology. Postmodernism is not a rejection of modernism but is a critique of it. It implies a relation to modernism. Playfulness. Postmodernist writers often use tools like black humor, wordplay, irony, and other techniques of playfulness to dizzy readers and muddle the story.

3. Fragmentation. The postmodernist literature took modernism's fragmentation and expanded on it, moving literary works more toward collage-style forms, temporal distortion, and significant jumps in character and place.  Fragmentation and disorientation are no longer tragic, compared to modernism. It also celebrates and considers fragmentation and decentredness as the only possible way of existence, and does not try to escape from these conditions. 

4. Metafiction. Literature during this era emphasized meaninglessness and play. Writers began to experiment with more meta elements in their novels and short stories, drawing attention to their work's artifice and reminding readers that the author is not an authority figure. 

5. Intertextuality. Many post-modern authors wrote their work overtly in diaogue with other texts. The techniques they used to use included pastiche (or imitating other author's styles) and the combination of high and low culture.

In the early twentieth century, many authors, composers, architects, and other intellectuals rebelled against the strictures of older forms and ways of doing things.
Architects began creating more functionally oriented buildings; composers created different methods of organizing musical sounds to create new music; authors felt similarly constricted and reacted against old styles and formats of poetry and fiction.

These are some of the most relevant historical events related to this movement:           
1. The birth of late capitalism in 1973.
2. The Postmodern Condition is published in 1979.
3.
