How do you define music?

To me music is something you not only hear but feel. It can be created through voice, instruments, every day objects, almost anything, causing people to feel certain emotions just by the push of a button. Music has lots of different moving parts but then it can also be simple and only have one. Versatile yet effective is how I like to think of it. It can be written down in different ways, it can be heard, seen, felt. It embodies all of your senses at once, causing a full body experience. So to me, music connects all walks of life in the most wonderful way possible.

Since I was born I have constantly been surrounded by music almost on a daily basis. The credit for this goes to my incredible Dad who has been challenging me musically since then. I took five years of piano, Played the Tenor saxophone for 4 years through out middle school and then was a part of my high school color guard where we preformed with the marching band every day. Not to mention having earbuds in my ears almost 24/7 trying to soak up new artists and music all the time. It helps me focus when I’m studying, pump me up when I’m working out, lifts up my spirits when I’m sad, and so much more. Therefore I have no idea what I would do on a daily basis if music wasn't in my life.

My music would have to be mostly upbeat songs that go across all genres. I am not someone who likes to wallow in my own sadness so for me music helps put me in a better mood. Thats why most the songs on my playlists have upbeat tempos and a fun chorus that you can sing along to. One of my favorite things is whenever we go on a family road trip I have a handful of songs that my family always knows I have to play or else the road trip isn't complete so I would consider those to be some one my all time favorite songs. A song that is at the top of that list is “Mr. Blue Sky” by ELO. This song has become the soundtrack of my life and I cant help but be put in the best mood when this song comes on.

I am very open to almost all forms of music and love lots of different genres but if I had to choose a particular one it would have to be indie or alternative. (I do love my oldies though I’m a sucker for the 60s and 70s) Alternative music just has so much life to it and you can go so many directions with it as well. It;s not too obnoxious but you can still find your hype songs within the genre if you want. Specifically I love Regina Spektor, Cage the Elephant, and San Fermin to name a few but each one of these artists truly bring me so much happiness in my life and have so much to offer with each one of there songs.

This is quite the loaded question because music really means everything to me. You often don't realize how much till you really sit down and think about how much music is a part of your life on a daily basis and how its shaped you as a person. It allows me to express myself in more ways than I ever thought possible. I am able to connect with so many different types of people I may have never met other wise. I can’t count how many friends I have made just from listening to the same artist, playing the same instrument, being in the same band, and dancing or singing the same song together. The amount of times music has impacted my life are too many to name and I couldn't be more thankful for the person it has and continues to make me.

I wasn't the best but I met life long friends and had so much fun being a part of the band. (These awkward band pics add the full affect)
