Before children were given the map, we taught them to understand the concept of north, south, east and west. We took a map of our town, pointing out familiar places like the school, the kindergarten, the stadium. We used symbols like a smiling face for the kindergarten, a school bus for the school, a ball for a school stadium associating symbols with familiar places.

Using the given map were the places of a hidden treasures had been marked, kids found "forest treasures".

By collecting cones from nature, children's interest and curiosity about nature increased. While children's attention and focus skills were supported, they were provided with careful observations. They reinforced geometric shapes by improving their skills such as classification and sorting with mathematical thinking skills. With the cone printing study, their artistic expression skills developed by experimenting with different colors and shapes.

The pine cones used in this activity were collected by children during a previous field activity called “Treasure Hunt.”

The worksheets, created in Canva, depicted fir and pine trees with their pine cones. Children wrote composition equations and matched them, sorting the correct number and type of pine cones as answers.

During this playful outdoor learning experience, children developed:
