St. Catherine's: The teaching environment in the gymnasium, while being disconnected from the actual school, it is a large gym with lots of lighting. The facility also has a large dirt field, that was often available used.
Wilbur: Wilbur's environment was a great environment as well. There was a lot of teachers in the halls. The classrooms were clean and well taken care of. I didn't notice any markings on the desk.
Overall: I would give both locations two big thumbs ups.

St. Catherine's: At Saint Catherine's I observed that many of the students felt comfortable with Mrs. Elson. Whether, if it was to tell her a funny story or just how their sports season is going.
Wilbur: At Wilbur I observed Mrs. Loehr, was a very beloved teacher by students and teachers. Many students moaned once she announced there would be a substitute the following day. In this classroom the teacher made the students feel comfortable and treated them as they were equals. In Mrs. Barnett's classroom, this being a bit more of a special education class you could tell the teacher truly cared about the well being of the student. She showed great concern when one was acting out of sorts and feeling ill. I could tell the students appreciated the care and felt comfortable here too.

St. Catherine's: Overall the students seemed to get along quite well. They were able to play Gagaball without to much questioning each other. (Long story short Gagaball is a super fun game, however can lead to argument of whether someone is out). So, being able to play without arguing showed great maturity and trust among the students. There was a once instance during a class of a four-way capture the flag, where a few boys would fight over whether if someone was out, but Mrs. Elson did a good job assessing the situation and calming the boys down.
Wilbur: At Wilbur being in more of a classroom setting it was a bit harder to see interactions between the students because they were more working on class work. However, in one class one female student did stand up and start yelling at a male student. Announcing she isn't afraid to fight him, because she believed that he was talking bad about her.

St. Catherines: Similar to teaching environment, it was a well lit school, which to me means the world to an atmosphere. I didn't see much of the school in my observing however, the office was well secured so no outside guests could enter the school without going through the office and I was always welcomed.
Wilbur: School atmosphere was great, tons of teachers in the halls to make a safe environment. A teacher did let me at the start of the day through a side door cause it was cold walking around the building. I didn't ask, she just opened the door and said come through here, while it was very welcoming, seemed a bit unsafe. A little bit of a darker lighting in some areas.
Overall: I give both two thumbs up

While I did enjoy my day of observing at Wilbur, getting to go to St. Catherine's on 5+ occasions really has made excited for my career. St. Catherine's is my ideal K-8 school if that is the school I choose to someday work at that age level. I never dreaded coming in, I even remarked to the teacher multiple times, if I am overstepping by coming again and again, to let me know. I just enjoyed going

My favorite day at St. Catherine's was by far the day of Walk in Sister's shoes. Long story short, in the Catholic School system in Wichita, there are some schools with great funding and some with less. While the diocese oversees it all, a lot of the funding comes from the specific church connected to the school, so if the church doesn't receive as much funding due to sometimes poverty of the area, the school suffers. So every year, there is the money drive in the larger schools to bring money in to help support those smaller more less funded ones. Now to jump to my experience. So, in support of that the "Specials" (PE and Music) teamed up that day and everyone during that class period did Mighty Milers ( a program for walking that earns the students rewards). I really got to interact that day with the students. Punching their mighty milers cards after every lap.
This photo is of my nephew who participated, he is a Kindergartner, but had permission to take his photo, so I thought the photo was still relevant.
