In the first chapter , everyone was in denial. When the Hungarian police came , they gave everyone the illusion that things would be okay, but the worse was sure to come. In the second chapter, Jews from Sighet had been transported by cattle car to Auschwitz, a concentration camp that Jews were sent to during the war. In the third chapter, they arrive to Auschwitz. Elie lies about his age and so does his father . If they pose as 18 and 40, they would be able to avoid death. They would be sent to work as farmers, and if they didnt work hard enough, they would be killed. The stench of burning flesh could be smelled in the air. They were fortunate enough to be sent to the concentration camps. He was seperated from his mother and sisters. They were sent to the crematorium and have not been seen again.

In chapter 4, Elie gets sorted after the travel from the old camp. he gets assigned to the warehouse, with a really mean dude who oversees it. the mean dude beats up Elie's father. Elie avoids getting his gold tooth taken out for a few weeks and then one of the people tortures his father to get Elie to give it up. he meets the french girl who doesn't seem to have much importance to the plot. elie sees idek the mean guy getting hanky panky with someone and he gets whipped for it. some boy gets hanged and everyone is sad. In chapter 5, Elie doesn't want to pay his respects to God, and doesn't fast on Yom Kippur like he should. The selection comes and goes, and everyone gets the poop scared right out of them. Elie was not written down, but his dad was. Dad isn't killed, and Elie's foot decides it isn't having fun by swelling up and landing him in the hospital. While he's in the hospital, the Red Army approached. Thus, the camp gets evacuated, but people in the infirmary are allowed to stay. Elie hears that people who stay will be wiped out, though, and goes with his father to the next camp. Then Elie gets salty because the people who stayed were liberated by the Russians.
