1. As Ralph and Piggy discuss the murder of Simon, Ralph admits the truth but Piggy rationalizes the situation. Which response is more typical of human beings in general? Why? What do the two boys’ responses indicate about each of them?

2. When Ralph tells Piggy that he is frightened “of us” and wants to go home, he is echoing Simon’s earlier statement that perhaps the boys themselves are the beast. Was Simon right? Does Ralph have reason to be frightened “of us”? Explain.

3. What does Jack’s denial that they killed the beast reveal about him? Do you think Jack truly believes there is a beast? Why or why not? Does his continuing to promote the existence of the beast to the others give him any advantage over them?

Yes, Ralph has many reasons to be frightened "of us". At any moment anything can happen, the boys are so insane and savage that they're unpredictable. For example, Simon's death. It was completely unexpected.

Simon was right after all humans, were the cause of his death, not a savage beast. At the sight of Simone's murder Ralph has every reason to fear the human race. Humans are a species that are capable of commuting the most heinous deeds known to man, and the boys are a prime example of human savagery. -Genesis Garcia

I would say that Simon was right because so far they have caused more chaos than the 'beast' has. If I was Ralph I would also be afraid of them as a whole too. Everyone has basically gone crazy and is okay with killing their friend in the most inhumane possible way. The dangers of some possible beast does not come close to the wildness stored within the boys.

Simon was right: the real monster wasn't some creature hiding in the jungle, but the darkness inside the boys themselves. Killing Simon proves just how savage they've become, and that's exactly what Ralph's been afraid of. He wants to go home because he sees how messed up things are on the island, and how easily the boys have lost their humanity. They've let their fears and anger take over, forgetting all the rules and kindness they once knew. So, the beast isn't something outside them; it's the bad stuff inside each of them, growing stronger every day.
