There are five cornerstone principles to a healthy school counseling relationships which include autonomy, fidelity, beneficence, justice, and non-maleficence. To create such an environment for students, the school counselor must:

·         That each student is a unique individual living in a unique time that requires a nurturing and safe environment to live up to their potential.

·         That ALL students have equitable access to a quality education and educational resources.

·         That every student has a right to be heard, understood, and treated with respect and dignity.

·         Be vigilant in their professional development to stay current with the changing school climate.

·         Be an advocate and equip students to advocate for themselves.

·         Be open and inclusive as well as creating an inclusive environment for fostering each student’s individual growth and learning styles.
