As a student and teacher, I have come to value problem solving skills. When working with a group of peers, I prefer working with others who are willing to approach problems with creativity and innovation. I find this combination to be especially valuable as a teacher working in special education where we have to come up with creative approaches to ensure student success.

As a SPED teacher, I will naturally be focusing on the knowledge attribute when working with my students. I will work daily to especially ensure that my students learn the literacy skills required both in school and future success. Literacy is a critical component across all subject areas and is an area that my students commonly struggle with.

Self Awareness directly corresponds with the attribute of Resilient Learners. Recognizing one's strengths and having self confidence is critical to viewing set-backs as opportunities to learn and grow. Especially in special education, so many students struggle with accurate self-perception, which is critical to be able to actively seek and accept new challenges.

I could grow in my cross-cultural competencies, becoming more aware and sensitive to other cultures and how these differences play a part in student behavior and achievement. With increased cultural awareness, perhaps I can better connect with my students, which can in turn lead to increased academic achievement and social-emotional skills.

One attribute that can naturally be brought to life in the classroom is personally and socially responsible. Those are qualities that we begin teaching kids from when they are young. We try to teach our students that these are important skills to have in life and you can see it modeled by some adults and peers around you.

Having those social emotional skills helps people communicate and work with one another because you will not always see eye to eye, you have to be able to have the skills to disagree in a respectful manner.

We teach students who come from many different backgrounds and so I think to be a well informed teacher and to be culturally aware would benefit me as an educator. I also came from a school that was not very diverse and so I look forward to the new experiences that I will have this year learning about different cultures.
