As I settle into Uni, I’m learning more about myself and where my strengths and weaknesses are, as well as finding my place in the environment. We did a sound walk of the Reid building, which was fun, I guess I never thought about all the noise we block out every day!
I got thinking about Marginalia by Masakatsu Takagi for some reason. The idea behind this project was that he would play piano with no real aim other than capturing the raw improvised piano performance whilst opening his house to the natural sound around him. Maybe my soundscape could do something like this?

I’ve been thinking over the project, don’t really have the idea yet. I’m interested in something mechanical and something natural mixing together, if I can tell a story then the soundscape will be tons more fun. I’ve been thinking about trains even, I’ve worked with samples of them before and there’s always so much detail in the noise.
In lectures we had some Pro Tools workshops. It’s been a hard week because the lectures are important for future work, but I could use some time to work on this soundscape; think I need another week to get used to the timetable and cement an idea.

My computer has died and is sent away to be fixed; this is a major setback, but I can’t stop now. I borrowed a few books from the library, seeing as I don’t have my computer I’m going to focus on the theory and field recording so that when I get it back, I can hit the ground running.
I’ve settled on an idea at least.
I might make something less musical and lean into the ambient direction. Using transport and cityscapes I think I can paint a decent image of a daily commute, maybe I can find something in the books I borrowed too, to give me some inspiration.

I was off work this week, so I spent some time in SimVis working on my soundscape, ingesting field recordings I had taken earlier in the week. I captured some decent stuff, it’s not the highest quality due to how it was recorded but it captures what happened and allows me room to sound design. The books have come in handy, particularly Field Recording by Paul Vistorek.
There was a lot of info on recording styles and good practice, I’ve taken some of this on, thinking of how I’m influencing a recording and what/where to target.

I’ve spent a lot of time in Pro Tools since getting my PC back, completely reworked the piece. I also feel a little more on top of things, having pretty much done my Conceptual Statement, and being most of the way through the soundscape itself.
I noticed that I made some ‘montage’ cuts of sorts in the piece, it’s probably on my mind thanks to the Critical Studies course. I’m starting to see more of my learning filtering into the work, like using the signal generators after watching one of the lecturers. I’ve got good pace, now just have to keep it up.

I have finished my soundscape, telling myself to stop was the hard part. I have experienced the feeling of eternal revision many a time, but I think my goal has been met. If anything, my soundscape is on the shorter side, but I hope the content is strong enough to make up for this.

As I prepare to upload everything, I’m finding it hard to believe that 6 weeks have gone by, it’s given me confidence however for the 6 weeks I have left to work on my other class projects.
