Since it was my first day, I reached the restaurant by 6.45am in the morning. I had appointed there as a temporary waitress. I was nervous. I was given a small briefing by the manager, Mr Jeganathan about handling the communication system with the customers. I was told that my working hours will be fixed for 8 hours where I will my start work around 7am in the morning and finish it at 3pm. I was briefed on how to greet customers and how to communicate to customers. I was also briefed and asked to memorize the menus and they tell me about the prices of foods too. I learn how to take orders, serve food and beverages to customers in dining establishment and relay orders to the kitchen staff too. Then, I practice it where I do greet customers, present menus, and explained daily specials to customers. I finished my work 3pm.

Since it was a food and beverage outlet we cannot take holiday like we used to do when we are at home. I was unable to take holidays too but I feel happy that I was able to spend my time in a right manner by doing an useful thing whereby I was hired as a temporary waitress in a Indian food restaurant. It was my day seven. I was really happy on the day seven because I am given opportunity to serve tourists who are from Australia. Since I can speak in English fluently and understand English well, I served them. I provide tourists with information about local areas that they can visit. It was one of the marketing strategies to promote the restaurant. I have given idea and helped the other employees to decorate the restaurant according to Indian culture so that the restaurant looks much more attractive. I thanked every one of them for being nice to me and they teach me a lot of new things that are very valuable for me. As this was my second day of work, I was given simple tasks first. This is my second day and I was briefed on how to answer questions related to menu. I was able to make menu recommendation, answer questions and share additional information upon request to customers when asked. For example, I was able to answer about portions, ingredients or potential food allergies. In order to answer questions related to menu we have to get to know fully about the menu’s way of preparation of the food and beverages. There are a lot of menus and it was quite hard for me to get to know to know about the whole menu. So, the manager ask me that it not a must that I have to remember all those things. We have to be smart by knowing about the main dishes only and he asked me not to strain myself by forcing myself to memorize much. I was his instruction by knowing about main items and yes, it was quite easy for me.  I get to know that, helpfulness and friendliness of a waitress can be one of the decisive criteria when selecting the restaurants and the service that provided by us can contribute greatly whether customers come back again or not. I was able to tell them the price of foods that are fixed by the manager without taking a long time. I get to know that, as an appointed waitress I am responsible for ensuring that customers have a satisfying dining experience. We should not let them wait even for food, drinks nor answers for the questions that they have. It cannot be denied that, the first thing that customers notice when approached by a waiter or waitress is their expression, body language, accessibility and responsiveness. I learn that, customer should not feel neglected if yes they feel that they are neglected, image of the restaurant will drop. I was running here and there from table to table just to take orders, pass the orders to the kitchen and serve customers. On this sixth day, I served food and beverages to patrons, prepare and serve specialty dishes at tables as required. Task that given to me getting easier to me since I was keeping on learning it. I was very confident with the task that given to me. I had learned and improved my communication skill when perform by giving the related and relevant answers for the customer’s enquiries. We have to answer in a short and precise manner with accurate so that customer will not feel bored and we can gain customer satisfaction through the service given by waiter or waitress. In order to answer all the questions that customer have, I prepared myself with the entire possible question that might ask by customers. Since I was very excited with my work, I refused to take rest at the time given before this. Since I felt tired, today I make used the period given to me from 11.15am to 11.45am to take a small rest. I walked here and there from customers table to the kitchen. It was tiring but yet it was my responsibility to serve customer with a warm heart. As one of the waiters takes emergency leave today, I have to replace his tasks too by taking order and pass it to the kitchen staff. I went back home with a tired face at 3pm.

Even though I feel tired morning itself, I greet my customers with a smile when they enter the restaurant and I have also approached their table with a smile. It is not said vain that smile opens every door. I have established visual contact, but avoid a long look at a person because that could make customer feel uncomfortable. I have tried to give fast response to all the questions that customer have, and help indecisive ones to make their order. They feel happy with the customer service that is given by me. Then after my rest, I continue with my job to serve and welcome customers at 11.45am. Thus, I started my work with energetic. I have take order in the clockwise direction in the table of customer. First, I have asked the children, then women and then gentleman. It was techniques that teach by my manager today. He told me that, we cannot simply take the order of our customer. So, we need to follow direction by giving priority to children first followed by adults order. We need to ask one by one with a polite tone as there is a saying sounds. ‘Whatever happens, customers should be first’. I have leaned on how to be a good waitress to have an enjoyable experience and at the same time I was able to develop appropriate skills such as communication skill and so on. After settle down all my cleaning work I went back home at 3pm.

Mr. Jeganathan teaches me on how to do the famous ‘Pasumbhur Tea’. As it was their secret recipe, normally he will not teach anyone. But I feel very happy that he teach me his family recipe that they are using for two generation. I was ableto prepare ‘Pasumbhur Tea’ like my manager teach me. There are no restaurant that provides ‘Pasumbhur tea’ as provided by restaurant Ganapathi. ‘Pasumbhur tea’ is prepared using fresh cow milk so it will taste look. ‘pasumbhur tea’ is the most demanded drink at restaurant Ganapathi. As the order for ‘Pasumbhur tea’ increase, I have to supply more by preparing more ‘Pasumbhur tea’ with my manager. It was a great pleasure of mine that I was able to learn it. I myself does not like milk, what more fresh cow milk. But once I have drink ‘Psumbhur tea’ at restaurant Ganapathi it becomes one of my favorite drinks already. Surely same goes to the customer that loves ‘Pasumbhur Tea’. It was not easy to prepare it. Until my rest time at 11.15am to 11.45am I just helped him with the preparation of that tea. After that,  I have helped Mr. Jeganathan’s wife Mrs. Jeyaletchumy to calculate profit and loss of their restaurant by using the knowledge that I have learnt in university in subject Accounts. I have teaches them the new way of calculating profit and loss since they are tied with the traditional way. Moreover, it is easy compared to the old style of calculating profit and loss. Mr. Jeganathan felt very happy after I teach his wife the new way and they are able to catch it since they are educated. After make sure they understand it well, I have done all my cleaning work at went back home at 4pm. I went back one hour late since I was teaching them to calculate their restaurant’s profit and loss. I found difficulty when I am asked to do reservation to a big family of 60 people for lunch. So, the manager Mr. Jeganathan teaches me how to do reservation. In order to do reservations we need to get customers hand phone number and we need to ask if they want to order any food as pre-order so that they can enjoy their meals directly after reach restaurant. It was a new experience for me that day. On this day, I spent my time to clean the inner section since I want to provide excellent customer service to ensure satisfaction. After the cleaning progress, I finished my work and went back at 3.30pm.

Since, today I have been asked to come early I have asked my father to drop me in restaurant. Mr. Jeganathan told me that, he was happy with a worker like me because I always come early. He told the other staff that, they should follow my attitude.  I have thank God for the appreciation. Then, I have helped them to prepare foods for school students since they got order from headmistress of a Malay school to prepare 600 food packs as it was for their “Hari Anugerah”. I have helped them with the packaging. After finished packaging I followed one of the staff in restaurant Ganapathi to deliver it in the school by car. I am very happy because day by day, I am getting new inputs that will increase my knowledge. After reach restaurant after the delivery from school, I was asked to go back home because it was already 3pm. I went back at 3pm.

Even though I feel sad a bit, I was excited thinking that only one more day to go. So, with no heart feeling I started my work at 7am. Since I am a temporary waitress and I was there to gain knowledge, the manager wants me to get exposed with all kind of tasks. So, this day thirteen, I become a cashier since the manager and his wife were not around because they need go for medical checkup. It was my first time I became a cashier and I feel really nervous when has to face customers. I should not let them to wait in order to make the payment. So, I was able to handle it. After a few hours I feel better and I was able to complete my task as a cashier in restaurant Ganapathi. I went back home 3pm after manager and his wife reached restaurant from their medical checkup. They felt happy knowing that I was able to do the task given by them today.
