I am a Chinese student at the Kang Chiao International School. I transferred to KCIS in Grade 5 and was a student at a public school before. I lived in Kunshan with my parents. I think Mandarin is my primary language and English is my secondary language because my English is much poorer than my Mandarin. I only communicate with my parents in Chinese at home because my parents don't speak English, while my parents are attempting to learn some spoken English to improve themselves. After I had the first class of EAS, I realized that academic writing requires rigorous logic, a close link between each sentence, and formal academic wording. In the first few classes, I didn't get the point of them, but after the first monthly test, I am gradually becoming well in the performance of utilizing them.

The article "Inventing the randomized double-blind trial: the Nuremberg salt test in 1835", written by Michael Stolberg, analyzes the example of randomization and double-blinding in evaluating homeopathy. Homeopathy was claimed as pseudoscience by Von Hoven, the city's highest ranking public health official and head of the local hospitals, while the biased theory of homeopathy was defended by the homeopathic doctor Reuter. Von Hoven set up a double-blind experiment to disprove Reuter’s theory. In the study, 100 vials were divided into two groups evenly. 50 vials contain distilled snow water, the placebos; another 50 vials were homeopathic C30-dilution. After three weeks, participants were asked to report their symptoms, and 50 out of 54 participants were responded to the researchers. At the end of the experiment, the sealed list of content of vials and the participants’ responds were compared by researchers. The conclusion was homeopathy don't affected patients . Reuter’s theory was disproved. The participants' bias to homeopathy were existed, although the researchers tried to eliminate the bias through randomization and double-blind experiments.

2 How do you read?

skimming the text to know the overall meaning of the article, then I can read it carefully. when I do research I scan the text to find information I need or interest.

Based on a survey done by the Walton Family Foundation and Impact Research, 22 percent of students used the chatbot to help with their studies weekly and more than half of the teachers reported using ChatGPT at least once since its release. Although it was widely regarded as a helpful educational assistant, concerns about cheating remained. Despite the concerns, ChatGPT has been used ethically by teachers like Diego Marin and Patrick for educational tasks and allowed in class for students to use ethically.

Nevertheless, new worries about AI's influence on examination scores and cultural competency issues have grown. What is academic integrity, and what is plagiarism?

Academic integrity is when students behave honestly and ethically when they write their essays, involving citing the sources properly, following the rules of an institution, and respecting and acknowledging the intellectual property of others in their work. Students' work must be completely done by themselves. When students cheat in exams or copy others' work without reference, students will be considered as academic misconduct. Plagiarism is using others' ideas, statistics, or creative works in students' writing as if they are generated by students themself, no matter intentionally or unintentionally.

Why do laws and rules about plagiarism exist?

Laws and rules exist to protect people's intellectual property and keep people's passion for innovation. If someone infringes others' copyrights, it is unfair to the original author of that idea, because they lose the fees that should be paid for using the patent or authorization. If these infringers were not punished, the passion of innovators would be discouraged.

1. What do you consider the main idea of the quotation?

Poverty may lead to crime.

2. Do you agree with this main idea? Why or why not?

I agree with this main idea because it is rational that people may commit a crime to survive or help their relatives to survive when they are in extremely poor circumstances. For instance, if a person has no money to pay the medical fees to cure his/her mom's cancer, the person may steal money from others to cure his/her mom.

Reflection on my final research project writing process

I applied the knowledge I have learnt well. Specifically, I used all of the topics, including writing process, research process, active and critical reading skills, bringing other's idea, developing argument, paragraph, introduction and conclusion, in my final research project. The main obstacle I encountered is paraphrasing. The similarity of my essay is above the minimal similarity, and the similarity report showed that the similarity mainly came from my ineffective paraphrasing in my evidences. I solved this problem by re-paraphrasing the part with similarity effectively. I fully met the requirement for Academic Integrity.
