Connection to Poem: A "Dream Deferred"

The line I chose for Rose from a "Dream Deferred" is "Maybe it just sags like a heavy load"(Hughes,9). Rose loved Troy even when it was hard for her to love him. She stood by his side even though he was a very difficult man. She wanted to be with him because he provided for her and her wanted her family to be whole. After she find out Troy cheated on her, her dream of a whole family was no longer possible. Rose was still not ready to let go of her family, for example in the play Rose tells Troy, "I been standing with you! I been right here with you, Troy. I got a life too. I gave eighteen years of my life to stand in the same spot with you" (Hansberry, 97). Rose carried her hope for her and Troy's marriage until the end of his life. Before and even after his affair. Rose didn't care if her dream was broken she was not willing to let go and she was always going to try till the very end.

Rose's Personal Motto

For Rose I chose "Your pain today will be your strength tomorrow" to be her motto, for when she first found out Troy was having another baby she was heartbroken and she ended up raising the baby as her own. Rose took the bad and turned it into a good thing. Instead of resenting the baby, she took what life threw at her and went with it. She was able to find the strength in her to raise a baby that her husband had with another women as her own and with love. For example in the text Rose tells Cory, “I didn’t want to make my blessing off of nobody’s misfortune, but I took on to Raynell like she was all them babies I had wanted and never had”(Hansberry,139). Rose took the role of Raynell's mother regardless of the the past and where the baby came from. Most people would not be able to do what Rose did and with that you can see her strength. She took the hurt of the past and turned it into a blessing for herself.

Rose's Theme Song

"I Knew You Were Trouble" is the perfect song for Rose. In the song Taylor wrote "and when I fell hard, you took a step back without me." Rose was holding on to Troy and wasn't going to let go no matter how much it would break her. Troy on the other hand was more than willing to look elsewhere besides the woman he was married to. In the play Rose tells Cory,"When I first met your daddy I thought, 'Here is a man I can lay down with and make a baby.' That’s the first thing I thought when I seen him"(Hansberry,137). Rose always wanted Troy. It was clear to her from the first time she saw him. She knew he had a big personality and then she wasn't afraid of that. It was what drew her in, but in the end would be one of her biggest struggles being married to Troy. In the song Taylor talks about missing the signs and not paying attention to the red flags because of how interested she was in the guy. It's the same thing for Rose, all she wanted was Troy and she didn't care what else that brought. He was her best option, so nothing else mattered. Rose's theme song is "I Knew You Were Trouble", for her struggles in her relationship with Troy all perfectly line up with what the relationship the song is about.
