In via, I serve the community through going to elderly homes, encouraging active lifestyle for elders. This helps me and my classmates to better socialise with the older population and improve our planning skills. For example, we need to plan games for the elderly like mahjong, uno stacks, pick up chopsticks and bingo and how to teach the elderly on how to play the games since there is a communication gap.

I used to think certain social services were not all about just giving back to the society and helping others but also about the profit they could make.

Now I think that actually some services actually are genuinely designed to help the society even if it means they face losses, as they serve the community with purpose and empathy and not just for the sake of doing it.

Our VIA practices are designed to build empathy and social awareness among students. We visited elderly homes to spend meaningful time with the seniors and organised activities such as board games and simple performances to engage them.

These experiences help us develop important values like empathy, teamwork, and resilience. We learnt to work with others, adapt to different situations, and connect with different people. We find purpose in giving back and learn that VIA is not just a school task, but a way to make a positive impact in our community.
