During the two year span of 1976-1978 the Galapagos Finches experienced a big change in both their offspring and their environment. We can see that through the drought, natural selection changed the finches beaks to help them survive. So when the drought happened the plants started to die because of lack of rain. That means the finches seeds that they eat (the portulaca seeds) died and cause the population of finches in the galapagos islands to go down drastically. This is when natural selection starts to take place. The finches that had the smaller beaks and could really only eat the portulaca seeds, didn't have enough food so died of starvation. But the ones that had bigger beaks were able to survive and mate with the other bigger beaked finches. This cause the finches offspring to be born with beaks that would help them survive better in the wild and live long enough to give off offspring to the next generation.
