In the 1960s, what would have been considered metal bands were bands like Led Zeppelin, Ozzy Osbourne, and Deep Purple. This is the year the metal scene was introduced. When these bands started and metal was being introduced, it was extremely controversial because people started to claim things like it were devil worship, or that when you played the music backward it had bad meaning. That year of metal definitely isn’t bands people would think of as metal because we have gotten much heavier and compared to modern music, these bands wouldn’t even necessarily be considered hard rock.

In the 1960s, rock bands were considered to be bands like The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Obviously, the Beatles would not be considered rock music anymore and that shows you how it was back in that time. These bands weren’t really using distortion or overdrive on their guitars because that's what rock was, cleanly played guitars with a bass guitar you could hear and it wasn’t ever really about how fast or loud you were when they played rock at this time because it was newer, but people still liked it and preferred it over metal.

In the 1970s, metal music was considered to be bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. At this time when metal was getting the recognition, it needed to gain popularity and have bands grow and get bigger. While the bands from the 1960s were still going, introduced a newer type of metal, and it was called thrash metal. This type of metal was getting the crowds up and going. This is definitely when the metal scene was heard about a lot more, but with growing popularity came the also growing hatred and conspiracies about metal music.

In the 1970s, rock bands were considered to be bands like AC/DC, Bad Company, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. This is the rock scene that pretty much everyone remembers. It is when rock was at its big moment and almost everyone was a rocker. This is also the time rock gained its subcategories just like metal did. Hard rock is what people called it and now today obviously they wouldn’t be considered hard rock compared to what is the hard rock standard now. But at the time, these bands were going for a kind of metal look and sound but couldn’t get as heavy as the other bands. They were, at the time, a heavy type of rock that was close to metal music.

In the 1980s, metal bands were considered to be well-known bands like Metallica and Megadeth. By far this is the most popular metal scene ever. No matter what age you are, you know who Metallica is, and most know who Megadeth is. This metal scene is when the big thing was 2 guitars, a bass player, and a drummer and in the mix, the rhythm guitar player was vocals and this setup has been adopted by many future bands including my own. This is the year that it was considered heavy metal and not just metal and thrash metal anymore. These years were innovative for the metal scene because they influenced many many future bands to form.

Just as in the metal scene, almost everyone knows who Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, and Guns N’ Roses are. The majority of these bands are also considered hard rock, but also during this time period was an introduction of alternative rock which was like a rock except it was mellowed out a little bit. It was a move towards newer sounding and newer styled rock but influenced by how rock had used to sound and what instruments they used.

In the 1990’s metal, bands like Slipknot, Korn, and Pantera were introduced as a new type of metal music. This is the year metal music shot up to what we would call heavy. With these years of metal music started strategic metal screaming, metal bands with 9 people, and songs going passed 6 minutes which at the time was a long time for a song. This is the time that is popular among metalheads because these bands are still known today and some are still touring today and turned metal into what it is now with the starting of death metal, grunge metal, black metal, and alternative metal.

These years of rock were known at the time but still on a down-low until the 2000s. This is when rock bands also started to get heavier just like metal was. When Soundgarden released their song Spoonman as a rock song it was a shock because it is in drop D tuning which at the time was usually a metal thing, but metal started to even go lower in tuning which changed and influenced rock to do it as well.

Modern Metal bands which be considered bands like Lamb of God, Asking Alexandria, Five Finger Death Punch, and Until I Wake. I feel as though this modern metal scene is at its peak and the best it's ever been. It’s heavier than ever and more progressive, fast, and technical. These bands are a lot heavier and a lot different than what the metal scene originally was like, it includes lots of music theory that was not really used much and has by far been more innovative for future metal.

Modern rock bands would be considered to be bands like Breaking Benjamin, I Prevail, Three Days Grace, and A Day to Remember. I’d say modern rock is definitely one of the better rock scenes but not as recognized as prior rock scenes. These bands are recognizable and heavy, the modern rock bands have definitely gotten heavier, and bands that were once considered heavy metal like Metallica and Megadeth, in the modern scene would probably be considered rock or hard rock, yet the current rock is definitely still closer to metal than Metallica and Megadeth would be.

I think the future of metal will be one of 2 things. I believe that it will change in the way of it getting heavier and even more and more innovative as it goes on and bands like dream theater start doing metal with synths, keyboards, and other things like that. There will definitely be new things introduced and used in the future metal scene. The other thing that could happen but I believe would never happen, is that metal would die. The reason I say it could happen is because metal over the years has gained a negative stereotype that people just think its all angry people or people encouraging crimes or things along those lines when its not. But I also believe metal will not die because it does have a heavy following of people that like it.

I believe that rock is going to continue to get better and better and get more and more popular especially with Nu metal being more Nu rock than metal. The reason the future of rock will most likely survive and thrive is because it's usually never too heavy for people and people who like other genres of music don’t usually dislike rock music. Nu rock which is a newer thing over Nu metal is rap infused rock. Nu rock is another reason I think rock will survive with a new fan base, is because with people liking rap, maybe rap rock is their thing, but there is also a possibility that Nu rock could destroy the current fan base and not attract a large new fan base to gain money off of. It's all a roll of a dice and a gamble and hoping.

I enjoyed doing this project on the topic of metal and rock music because it was able to help me look into, and do more research on these things that I want to be able to help change for the better in the metal scene. I liked this idea for a tech tool because you can use a full time line to show out the past, present, and future in a easy way while also being able to make it look good.
