Then, out of sheer hope, you toss it in the recycling because you figure might as well try, right?

WRONG!

So what is so wrong with it? Having non-recyclable items in with recyclable items can:

Produce more waste: Why is this? Because some recycling facilities have limited resources not allowing them to physically sort through recycling. If there are lots of non-recyclable items mixed with recyclable items, the whole batch, bag, or container could get tossed. Ouch.

Waste time and money: If a recycling facility is using a machine to sort out recycling, a non-recyclable item can get caught in the machine and cause the machine to malfunction or break. This costs time and resources to fix.

Ariana Avelar

Did you know that methane gas production is one of the larger sources of greenhouse gas emissions? Some of the leading contributors to methane gas production are the burning of fossil fuels and landfills. Composting is an environmentally conscious alternative, using organic materials to garden and farm which help to reduce the production of methane gas. Landfills produce large amounts of methane gas because piles of organic matter are decomposing in anaerobic conditions, which means the organic matter is being decomposed in the presence of microbes absent of oxygen, therefore producing harmful methane. Composting, on the other hand, uses an aerobic process in which microbes like, bacteria and fungi, thrives in the presence of oxygen and water. These thriving microbes use the carbon produced for energy and decomposing the organic matter within the compost soil. The remainder of carbon, or stable humus, in the soil is safe and the soil can be used agricultural and gardening uses. Composting is actually an easy process to begin. Start with nutrient rich soil in a designated composting bin or container, add some kitchen and garden waste and maybe some biosolids, give great access to oxygen, regulate watering periods, and there you go! You've started the process of composting! You can sit back and watch the growth within in your compost container.
I have recently begun composting and it has been an amazing process. A great alternative to waste management and it is very beneficial when it comes to gardening.

When it comes to saving water, check for leaks one way to do it is to find and repair water leaks, this can help save water, an also money.
2. Laundry: when doing Laundry, never wash less than a full load. Invest in a high-efficiency washer if possible.
3. Kitchen: If you have a dishwasher, run it only when you have a full load. However, as it turns out my they are significantly better in terms of efficiency, saving money, and the environment. They significantly reduce the amount of electricity used (which also means reduced electric bill). Even with them constantly on, what's known as Vampire Power, it is next to nothing on a monthly basis. However, you must take into account the initially higher price than regular incandescent bulbs or fluorescent bulbs. Though in the long run, the smart bulbs significantly win out for the environment not to mention you wallet. -IZD

https://smarterhomeguide.com/do-smart-lights-use-electricity-when-theyre-turned-off/

https://www.fluxsmartlighting.com/blogs/news/how-smart-lighting-saves-the-environment#:~:text=The%20study%20took%20into%20account,any%20other%20bulb%20out%20there.

Something you may have heard before or seen someone do is hide things under the lid of the toilet basin. A common practice for saving water is to place a brick in the basin, therefore when it fills with water you use .25 gallons less! overtime this adds up to you saving money and conserving water. But bricks deteriorate over time. So instead try filling a large water bottle with sand and have it take up some space.

The most talked about aspects of climate change (rising sea levels, changes in weather patterns, increases in temperature) grab all the big headlines; and for good reason they have huge implications to life around the globe. However an often underpublicized problem threatens all life in the ocean and any chance of sustainable fishing in the future. As the concentration of CO2 in the air rises some is dissolved into the ocean. The resulting acid formed from this dissolution binds with a crucial chemical used in the formation of shells and bones of sea life. Without this chemical sea creatures shells and bones are more brittle, weaker, and support less overall life. Scientists have been studying this issue and have discovered growing all kinds of plants along shorelines can limit the effects of acidification.

FRIDAYS FOR FUTURE…

or FFF, is a global climate strike movement that started in August 2018, when 15-year-old Greta Thunberg began a school strike for climate. In the three weeks leading up to the Swedish election, she sat outside Swedish Parliament every school day, demanding urgent action on the climate crisis. She was tired of society’s unwillingness to see the climate crisis for what it is: a crisis.

We know that there is only 1% of water on Earth is drinkable water, accessible which humans and animal could use to survive. Hence, we should not misuse water.
Here is some of the habits that you could do at home to save water.
1. Cut a couple of minutes off your shower helping save 150 gallons per month.
2. Only run the dishwasher and clothes washer with full loads. Doing this habit could save 1000 gallons a month.
3. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth could save 25 gallons a month.
Let's start doing small things today to save our next generations.

I look outside my window and see the trees rustling and hear my wind chime singing as the free wind energy moves them. I go to Ocean Beach and watch the surfers ride the waves compliments of the water via the wind. Chi is free and is all around us. Harnessing energy the environment provides seems the most obvious source of free power. Solar power is already doing this by transforming the sun's energy into electrical energy. Although the price and technology has improved over the years, the large amount of land space required for the panels has not changed. A solution to this may be found in floating solar arrangements – solar panels that float on lakes. This appears to be a viable solution to the problem of increasing water temperatures that contribute to destructive blooms of blue green algae. These blooms produce toxins that can kill animals that come in contact with them. The floating solar panels can cool water temperatures by shading the water from the sun. It can also decrease the amount of evaporation, conserving water in many areas. Much research still needs to be done to make sure that these floating solar panels and their shading characteristics do not harm the water and its inhabitants.

Living in one of the best climates in the country, gardening is a fun hobby to start. I had no idea how satisfying it was to grow your own food and harvest it. Over the years I have spent a lot of money buying fertilizers and plant foods for my fruit trees and vegetable plants. A 50lb bag of organic citrus fertilizer is $60 and a 6lb bag of worm castings is $10. I buy many bags a season so it tends to add up. One day I ran into a neighbor in her driveway. She was struggling to lift what looked like to be a bag of dirt out of her trunk. I thought it was odd considering it was in a clear plastic waste bag. I offered my help and carried the bag to her backyard. I asked her what was in the bag and she said it was coffee grounds from the local coffee shops. She was putting it in her worm composter to feed her worms. I had never heard of worm composting before and did a bit of digging. What I love about this article is that it is very comprehensive to novices like me and covers A-Z on vermicomposting. It talks about how to get started and the dangers of doing it wrong, ie. fly infestation. It was interesting to learn that worms are very delicate and require specific living conditions. They are also finicky eaters and won’t eat just any garbage. I loved the video of the build-it-yourself composter from a local here in San Diego. It has inspired me to get my Bob Vila on. My only challenge now is to get over my fear of worms.

I love this article because it gives 100 bits of advice on how to reduce plastic in your life. The author started this project in 2007 and based on some of her suggestions I don’t think she ever imagined a world we live in now. For example, although the idea of bringing your own re-useable containers for take-out and leftovers is a good one, and something I used to do, this practice is taboo at the moment. I don’t think I ever carried around re-useable utensils and drinking straws. Something to aspire to in the future though. What would be another solution? Perhaps eat everything that you ordered (for me, no problem!) or request take-out in paper containers, which most restaurants are moving towards anyway. Another piece of advice is ordering ice-cream on a cone. That was a no-brainer for me. Navigating ice-cream on a cone allows you to practice your strategic skills – you need to get to the melty parts before it dribbles down your hand. I think of it as a sticky Jenga.
