1. What needs to be done?
- In order to prevent further spread of the virus, the entire world/country needs to do their part by practicing social distancing. It is also our responsibility to still be good citizens to the rest of our community. This includes not hogging up important resources such as food, medicine, and sanitary products. within our community we need to make sure that those who cannot who are at most risk have the adequate resources to stay healthy, such as the elderly, and the sick. As a country the we also need to make sure our medical staff are properly equipped and protected so they can continue their work helping those in need affected by the virus.
2. Help a community recover from a disaster.
- People should still support small businesses in their time of need by ordering online or through charitable donations. Supporting non profits aimed at getting unemployed people back in the workforce after so many have lost their job due to the outbreak is also imperative. Supporting non profits that also distribute food, medicine, and other baseline resources to people in need looking to get their life back on track after the crisis is also something that needs to be done.
3. Use technology to support one another.
- Through the use of technology, schools have implemented online conference systems to aid students in receiving their education. Multiple social media platforms such as snap chat, and Instagram have implemented a new "stay at home story" where people around the world can share their fun experiences and ideas while practicing social distancing. Businesses such as uber eats, and door dash have also contributed in cutting the delivery fees to help support small businesses and restaurants during this time of crisis.
4. Discuss fake news seen in media.
- it is important do dissect the news and ascertain the truth at all costs especially when it comes to ones safety from the corona virus. There have been multiple cases of fake news already displaying miracles cures through harmful chemicals. People are taking advantage of the crisis in order to exploit people for money. These fake cures have already caused the death of more than one person. There has not only been fake news with possible cures, but also with the transmission of the virus. Some non credible sources have been saying that the virus has gone airborne. This has done nothing except cause more unnecessary fear and panic. It is important for people to stay calm, know and find the true facts about the virus inorder for out society to get through this crisis without losing our sanity, and to stay in a good healthy condition. It is also our job to find and expose people who are sharing fake news.

Step 1 Big Idea

CHALLENGES
1. Social Distancing:
- relates to mental health and physical health
- regarding mental health: high anxiety as a result of the unfamiliarity of such unique circumstances that been put upon us during an important stage in our lives regarding education + life experiences, disappointment resulting from cancellation of important events that build up the reputation of the "high school experience" such as Prom, Graduation, Concerts, etc, sadness, loneliness among teenagers
- regarding physical health: less physical activity because we are confined in our homes
2. Racism towards the Asian:
- Trump declared it to be the "Chinese Virus" and his supporters blindly make the assumption that all Chinese people have the virus and essentially blame them
- News show that Asian businesses and restaurants have been by far the most impacted in this whole situation when it comes to economic losses
- There has been a drastic increase in nonviolent as well as violent actions that have been taken since the outbreak as well as the ignorance to the severity of the issue for the Asian community (could even be considered a norm)
3. Economy/Business:
- extremely fast increase in unemployment rates as well as several being laid-off from their work due to closures of businesses as well as the struggle to keep staff on the payroll
- consumption has slumped as businesses close and households hold off purchases that aren't for necessities due to finances + job concerns as well as restaurants, arts, entertainment, and recreation such as movie theaters have been closed
- gas prices have dropped because of social distancing so the demand for gas is continuing to decrease
- lack of healthcare + hospital workers having limited supply equipment from personal protective equipment (PPE) to ventilators and hospital beds
- 79% of countries don't have sick leave
- law restrictions regarding travel and tourism
4. Education/Schooling:
- some schools don't have the money to facilitate online schooling or students don't have access to technology/wifi at homes --> cancelling school all together in some areas
- Athletics + school events have been cancelled which is not only detrimental to the mental health of the students but also brings upon the issue with refundments (schools are also facing budget challenges)
- AP Testing + SAT Testing concerns/changes are extremely prevalent especially for us high school students
5. Panic Buying of food and necessities
- problematic because it places an unprecedented strain on supermarket retailers and their supply chains --> limits communities' access to much-needed products
- most stores have gotten to a point where they allow consumers to purchase a maximum of popular items such as toilet paper, milk, etc.

Step 1 Big Idea Question 2

Resolvable:

Social distancing: maintaining adequate distance not only in public, but at home as well. Making sure to limit physical interactions with others as much as possible. Wearing PPE if you’re coughing, sneezing, etc. in order to help prevent the spread of germs. Washing your hands and maintaining good hygiene in order to also prevent the spread of germs as much as possible. Exercising (at home) may help alleviate stress and keep you busy, as well as obviously staying healthy.

Mental health: making sure to not completely isolate yourself in terms of interactions. Calling, texting, facetiming, etc. is better than not interacting with friends/loved ones at all, and can help prevent any increased stress or depression in this time. Playing games with your family or participating in other activities that practice social distancing may help increase happiness within your family, and can help reduce the overall tension. Missing out on education is unfortunate, but the only thing we can do is to actively participate in online discussions, conferences, and making sure we stay up to date with homework assignments.

Racism: we can all avoid falling for stereotypes and increasing the negativity presented towards those who are most commonly blamed for the virus. Calling it COVID instead of the Chinese virus shows that blame isn’t present.

Economy: the most we can do is support our various family members that are struggling with their businesses or employment. If it means making sacrifices in your schedule to do so, it’s important that we keep that in mind in order to be respectful and understand that there are people all over the world that are suffering as a result of the virus, and that we should attempt to be as supportive as possible. We can also attempt to be more limiting with our resources and not be as wasteful, such as spending money on unnecessary things such as ice cream or whatnot.

Education/Schooling: we can attempt to offer help to other students (tutoring) if they’re unable to understand certain topics because they don’t have access to teachers as often. Helping with technology distribution is a bit difficult, but the district is attempting to give out chromebooks (I believe), so we can attempt to stay offline when possible in order to reduce internet traffic and allow students who have more homework to be able to do it more efficiently.

Shopping: don’t hoard or panic buy. Only buy what you need for that week (at most), and don’t purchase items that are WIC supported (people in that program need the goods more than we do). Be sure to be conscious about the older generation that needs goods as well, as they might have a harder time to get to the store and buy goods. Offer to help others if they’re financially needy, as this act of kindness can go on a long way.

Unresolvable:

Being able to completely recover events that got cancelled such as prom, bonding events, etc. as this would require a lot of money and planning on a district level

Completely removing racist fundamentals about the virus, as this is on an international level and people love to have a scapegoat. We can work on combating these types of ideologies and making sure people aren’t inconsiderate, but ultimately we won’t be able to change everyone’s minds.

Keeping businesses open, as this would require government help and a lot of funding.

Stay inside the whole time, as eventually we need to go out for groceries and other essentials.

Being able to teach ourselves certain materials, as students can only comprehend so much (mostly) without the assistance of teachers, so even with conferences there will be a decrease in student performance.

Stopping everyone from panic buying, as there will always be people that choose to not take others into consideration and will hoard resources.

1. Things we need to know moving forward
- What Background information do we need to know on the people that are suffering economically?
- What Information do we need to collect regarding what people are going through in a social aspect?
2. Methods in which we can help
- How does limiting social interaction by shutting down schools and business help to decrease the number of cases?
- What can we donate back to medical staff and the community in order to ensure that everybody is able to stay safe during these times?
3. Steps that are already being taken
- What are the measures that the government has taken to prevent the spread of the virus?
- How is US effectively communicating with countries that have already slowed down the curve?

When we are done with the guiding questions part, the 'guiding activities and resources' team will use this list of 6 questions to find resources and activities that can teach us the answer to these questions. After finding these resources, the Analysis team will go through the resources and activities found and create an answer for the 6 guiding questions. So this assignment moves in a step by step manner. The first two people to work on it finish the guiding questions, then the guiding activites and resources people find sources that can answer each of the questions, and then the analysis team writes an answer for the questions.

What collective efforts can the community make to ensure that the pandemic does not worsen?

The community can follow the basic health safety guidelines, which include wearing the appropriate mask and gloves whenever in public and maintaining good hand-washing etiquette. Ensuring that you’re socially aware of the troubles that others are going through can also help you be more considerate and sensitive to others needs, especially when there are people that are purposely being discriminated against because of their race.

How do we foster positive thinking and alleviate mental illness issues/stress during these times of uncertainty?

In the event that one is in need of a hotline, multiple lines such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the Disaster Distress Helpline exist to offer emergency assistance over the phone. In terms of less severe cases, and to help prevent a crisis, one can make sure to avoid isolating themselves and build up stress by calling friends and doing virtual exercises together, as well as exercising at home in general to help promote a healthy physical body, which in turn helps create a healthy mental state. The CDC also recommends creating a schedule at home that would mimic a normal day, meaning eating meals at regular times, studying, and exercising.

Themes:

The themes present in both of these questions are ones of caution and individual well-being. By focusing on our own health, we in turn take care of those around us, and by being more responsible we show our compassion and consideration for those around us. From this, we can learn that none of us are alone in this time of trouble, but we always have resources and activities that can help us overcome this crisis.

We took the various information we compiled into our nutrition/exercise plans and each messaged a few of our friends to see how they'd respond to our ideas, and the overall concept of trying to stay physically and mentally healthy during the pandemic. A majority of the people responded positively, saying that though they've lost a lot of motivation, they'd be willing to attempt a few of the exercises or even come up with their own in order to maintain a healthy mind and body. Especially since the self quarantine has left people stuck at home, many held a similar mindset that bettering their lifestyle choices during this time through healthy eating and exercise would definitely be good habits to take up in their free time.
However, there were of course some people that simply weren't interested at all, which is very understandable considering how there is a huge lack of motivation to do things deemed non-essential during this crisis. Many also explained that they were focusing on other tasks, such as school or hobbies, which leads us to understand that people that responded positively were those that completely believed they had enough free time to commit to this lifestyle. If there was any other responsibility in their lives, these changes would be hard to continuously partake in.
If we were to further our campaign, we could possibly put more of a focus on the importance of staying physically healthy as a whole instead of just offering suggestions as what to do, because if people don't grasp the importance of it in the first place, they most likely wouldn't be willing to attempt to do so in the first place. The most important first step is to get into the right mindset. If people are only told to follow a certain structure, they won't understand the importance of feeling wellness in their bodies.
