On September 3rd I was able to do a 9 mile hike in Zions. I have never done a hike for so long and that caused my toes to hurt due to the slants of the switchbacks on the way down. But once I got to the top of where I wanted to be, I realized that I was higher than Angels Landing. This made me think about all the people who try to do Angels landing and want to go where the chains are at, yet if they just stayed on the first trail, they would have had a safer ascent and higher views! Amazing how beautiful out land is in Utah! -Chelsea

We used our knowledge of coordinate planes and positive/negative integers to reverse engineer a demo coding game. Students worked in teams to chart characters and how they moved or changed in relation to the coordinate plane. Afterwards, they were worked in teams to brainstorm their own games using their coding and math knowledge. They shared their ideas with other teams, making sure to use appropriate academic language. Students were engaged the entire time and had a blast!

I also noticed the different creatures and how they interacted with each other. It was interesting that there was no wind high up on this mountain. I think it is important for students to go on nature walks. It will help them to observe and analyze different things happening around them. It may also help them to recognize what they have been learning in the classroom, in the outside world.

I went on a nature walk the other day and it was so wonderful. I feel one of the best ways to observe science concepts is through being surrounded by nature! In this picture the red rocks are beautiful! I could easily teach a lesson about rock forms and how to identity the differences between each type. My main though, however, was about clouds! How fun would it be for students to observe clouds as their homework? I was thinking it would be great to do a whole unit on clouds, which could lead to weather (precipitation and humidity) and then having the students do a tracking chart for one month to observe the types of clouds in the sky each day. A month would be long enough that the students could observe a variety of clouds, but short enough to keep it interesting and feasible for them.

This picture is a few months old, but it was taken at the Saint George Nature Center. Saint George has an entire staff dedicated to educational camps/programs that kids can register for throughout the year. Such camps include the crazy crawdad nature camp and the wiggly worms nature camp. Those camps do require individual sign ups and have fees. However, one cool thing that the nature center does is for entire grade levels of schools! Students are divided into groups and do a rotation system between the Nature Center (where they learn about the duck pond, ecosystem, and plants), the tennis facility (where they learn about tennis and the movement of the body), the Tonaquint Gardens (where they learn about specific plants) and the Thunder Junction All abilities park (where they receive a break to play). I completely forgot about this resource until I called the Educational Program Leader, but a few years ago I actually volunteered to be one of the coaches for the tennis center that the students participated in!

So I explained the article to them in my own words. Currently, we are beginning to learn about weather patterns. I thought this article would be a great way of showing my students that weather can look different depending on where you are in the world. The article discussed how there are more storms in the southern hemisphere than the northern hemisphere. Research has known this for decades but could never explain why, until now. The northern hemisphere has less storms because there are more mountain ranges and less of the surface is ocean. I pointed out the hemispheres to my students on a map as I explained it to them. The information was a great addition to my lesson, even though students were unable to read it.

STEM NEWS that ALL educators should know about - Ashley Veater

I found the most amazing article that I think every teacher and person in general should know about! Here is the link.
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2022/12/221202124841.htm
This article discusses how playing the piano boost brain processing power and can help lift moods. The article studied participants who played the piano, who only listened to the music, and a control group who did neither. The researchers found that after just a few weeks the people who listened to the music had enhanced abilities to process multi sensory information. The most interesting thing is that it did more than just enhance people's musical abilities; it actually increased their audio-visual processing and overall achievements across other task. I think knowing this information is so useful because you can give students the opportunities to listen to classical music while they are independently working. Of course, you would want to be mindful of students who it might distract. However, the majority of learners should benefit from listening to music as they complete their assignments.

I am in a kindergarten class and honestly we do not do many STEM projects. We have done monthly school-wide STEM projects, but none that are specifically for Kindergarten. Kindergarten mainly focuses on literacy and mathematics skills, so many of their learning activities are aligned to those goals and objectives.
When I asked my mentor teacher for the science education tests/assessments for the district/state she did not have the current data for them. My mentor teacher said she does not focus on STEM or science in Kindergarten because to her the most important concepts for kindergartners to learn are literacy skills to read and social skills to know how to behave in a classroom. She did say that usually when we do the monthly STEM projects she likes to focus more on a scientific method, such as inquiry or observation. She will introduce the whole lesson in a way that gets students thinking about scientist, which I believe is a great skill to have.

I tried calling but did not get a response and I do not have the opportunity to call during regular business hours very often (because I am at the elementary school, the University, or work lol), so I decided to just email her and hope for a response. Today I got my response!
I asked her two major questions:
1. What resources and services do you provide to the schools?
2. How does data on students from the district affect funding for the STEM/science programs?

Her responses were:

1. We provide materials, learning opportunities, and data/support. The materials we provide include: learning kits from various partnerships (Red Butte Gardens, Natural History Museum of Utah), non-consumable devices and supplies such as digital microscopes and mag-lev tracks, and consumable materials such as tin foil and styrofoam. The learning opportunities we provide are a combination of in-house and external: iSEE partners offer workshops as does the State. We also design and offer our own PL events. Data and support that we offer includes identifying areas of need based on data, creating/importing assessments into our LMS, communicating about expectations and resources available.

2. Funding for science/STEM support comes from different sources: some of the funding this year came from ESSR funds (which will not continue), the majority of the funding comes from a Title IV grant--this provides for a person (she puts together all the communication, loads resources into our LMS, and coordinates learning events --among other things!) and it funds part of a science/STEM program called Mystery Science. Data will be analyzed at the end of the year to {hopefully} determine if there is a correlation between resources and strategies used and end-of-level test scores in grades 4&5. If a correlation can be found, the connected resources/strategies will be continued or encouraged. Resources and strategies that do not show a positive correlation will be discouraged. I am not sure if this answers your question thoroughly. If you need something else or more detail, please let me know.

I think this would be a good local resource to use to show students the changing colors of the leaves and the gradation of them. It would be interesting to discuss how seasons affect plant life and animal life and allowing the students to make observations. -Risa
