It introduces practical techniques such as the "No Opt Out" strategy to ensure active participation and accountability from all students. I found the concept of "Right is Right" particularly useful, as it encourages me to set high expectations for accurate and complete answers. "Without Apology" is also a valuable technique for challenging my students intellectually while maintaining high expectations. By implementing the "Stretch It" technique shared in this chapter, I can create a stimulating learning environment that fosters critical thinking and promotes academic growth among my bilingual chemistry students.

The chapter 7 "Building Ratio Through Questioning" focuses on questioning strategies to extend students' thinking and deepen their understanding of concepts.

I particularly appreciate the emphasis on "Wait Time," as it allows students to process their thoughts and encourages higher-order thinking. Another key concept discussed in this chapter is the use of cold calling, where teachers strategically call on students without prior warning or allowing them to opt out. The author explains how cold calling helps ensure that all students are actively involved in the learning process, promoting accountability and preventing disengagement.

By implementing the strategies discussed in these chapters, I hope I can create a more dynamic learning environment that promotes student involvement and academic success.

Chapter 12

Technique 58

The concept of Positive Framing is particularly appealing in the context of education. The idea that corrections and interventions are more effective when framed positively aligns with the psychological principle that people generally respond better to encouragement than criticism. It underscores the importance of reinforcing the belief that students can succeed and that their efforts are valued.

The notion of assuming the best in students is a powerful aspect of Positive Framing. It highlights the importance of giving students the benefit of the doubt and refraining from immediately attributing negative intentions to their actions. This assumption not only builds trust but also communicates the teacher's confidence in the students' ability to meet expectations.

The idea of challenging students aligns with the understanding that many individuals thrive on competition and the opportunity to prove themselves. Integrating challenges into the learning process not only adds an element of excitement but also encourages students to push their limits and excel.

Finally, the emphasis on talking about expectations and aspirations ties the Positive Framing approach to broader life goals. By connecting academic tasks to future aspirations and higher standards, teachers can instill a sense of purpose and long-term vision in their students.

Technique 59

One key aspect highlighted is the need to differentiate between acknowledgment and praise. Acknowledgment is described as recognizing when a student meets expectations, while praise is reserved for situations where a student exceeds expectations. This distinction is crucial in maintaining the credibility of positive reinforcement. It emphasizes the importance of saving explicit praise for instances where it is truly earned, ensuring that students understand the value and significance of the acknowledgment they receive.

The reflection on reinforcing actions rather than traits aligns with the research on mindset, emphasizing the growth mindset over a fixed one. Praising effort, hard work, and specific actions not only boosts confidence but also cultivates a mindset that sees challenges as opportunities for growth. Connecting positive reinforcement to a growth mindset contributes to the long-term development of students.

The distinction between private and public praise is an insightful consideration. While public praise can be powerful and motivating, private praise adds an element of genuineness and sincerity. Varying the delivery of positive reinforcement, including both public and private moments, contributes to its effectiveness. The discussion acknowledges that the unpredictability of the praise format enhances its memorability.

Technique 60

The notion that being warm does not undermine one's ability to be strict and vice versa is a powerful reminder for educators. The technique suggests that teachers should strive to embody both qualities at the same time, creating an environment where high expectations are seen as integral to caring for and respecting students.

The specific strategies provided to make Warm/Strict effective offer practical insights. Explaining to students the rationale behind rules and consequences, distinguishing between behavior and personal attributes, and demonstrating that consequences are temporary contribute to a more understanding and supportive learning environment. These strategies emphasize the importance of communication, empathy, and quick forgiveness in maintaining a positive teacher-student relationship.

The emphasis on warm nonverbal behavior, such as physical gestures and maintaining eye contact, adds a layer of emotional connection to the strictness. This blend of warmth and strictness aims to help students navigate apparent contradictions and realize that they can embrace both positive and challenging aspects in their academic and personal lives.

In summary, the Warm/Strict technique advocates for a balanced and integrated approach to teaching that fosters a supportive yet disciplined classroom environment. It encourages educators to communicate effectively, set clear expectations, and embody both warmth and strictness to help students develop a nuanced understanding of responsibility, accountability, and personal growth.

Chapter2,

Technique 8 The passage emphasizes the importance of creating a "Culture of Error" in the classroom, where mistakes are seen as a positive and valuable part of the learning process. Here are the key points and strategies highlighted in the text:

1. Embracing Mistakes: Champion teachers create a classroom culture that embraces errors, viewing them as a crucial step towards understanding and mastery.

2. Shared Endeavor: The best teachers involve students in the process of Checking for Understanding (CFU), making it a shared endeavor between teachers and students.

3. Shaping Perception: Teachers work to shape students' perception of mistakes, encouraging them to see errors as a positive and critical step toward improvement.

4. Acknowledging and Sharing Mistakes: Teachers recognize that students learn best from mistakes when they are willing to acknowledge and share them. Creating an environment where it's safe to be wrong is crucial.

5. Cultural Shift: Moving students from defensiveness or denial to openness about mistakes is a critical cultural shift. This openness makes it easier for teachers to identify and address mistakes.

6. Building a Culture of Error: The passage provides examples from a classroom where a Culture of Error is successfully established. For instance, students nominate problems to review, and the teacher encourages a supportive atmosphere.

7. Reinforcing a Culture of Error: The passage mentions specific strategies used by a teacher, such as praising students who ask questions, tracking improvement, and fostering a sense of teamwork among students.

8. Peer Support: Encouraging students to support each other during struggles and errors is essential. The passage gives an example of a school where students use gestures like "sending love" to show support.

9. Teacher's Role in Modeling: Teachers play a crucial role in modeling how to handle mistakes, both their own and students'. The way teachers communicate and depict mistakes is significant in shaping the classroom culture.

10. Four Key Parts of Culture of Error: The text identifies four key components of a Culture of Error: expecting error, withholding the answer, managing the tell (unintentional cues from teachers), and praising risk-taking.

11. Expecting Error: Teachers communicate to students that mistakes are normal and valuable. The goal is to build a culture where errors are seen as a positive part of learning.

12. Withholding the Answer: The passage suggests delaying the revelation of whether an answer is right or wrong until after discussion. This keeps students engaged and focused on the underlying ideas.

13. Managing the Tell: Teachers should be aware of their unintentional cues (tells) that reveal their thoughts about whether an answer is right or wrong. Managing these cues helps create a more neutral and supportive atmosphere.

14. Praise for Risk-Taking: Encouraging students to take risks, especially when they are unsure, is essential. Teachers should praise students for their bravery in asking questions or attempting challenging problems.

Overall, the passage emphasizes the need to establish a classroom culture that normalizes errors, values learning from them, and promotes a positive attitude toward the process of making mistakes.

Technique 9:

In this passage, the author emphasizes the instructional value of analyzing errors in teaching, particularly through diagnostic assessments. The benefits of a "Culture of Error" are highlighted, where educators delve into understanding why students make mistakes, providing critical insights for remediation and improving instructional methods. The passage introduces three levels of error excavation—Assess and Move, Light Excavation, and Deep Excavation—each offering different approaches to leveraging errors as valuable teaching tools. The concept of "Own and Track" is also introduced, emphasizing student accountability in correcting and revising their work as a crucial step in error analysis. The overall goal is to create a classroom environment where errors are viewed as opportunities for learning and growth.

书中强调要注重具体的、确切的方法，而且提到了“very small changes can have large and profound effects on big problems”，比如书中作者的朋友通过拔牙成功减轻了体重。
