Non-conformity

Quote on page 31: " I thought you were going to leave me behind "
This quote has to do with non-conformity because in this situation Jeannette falls out of the car and her parents don't realize that she is gone until Brian can finally get the message through. It shows how careless the parents can be.
Jeannette and her siblings go pretty much throughout the entire story with no parental guidance. They are always ignored or pushed away whenever they ask their parents for help or some sort of guidance. This is what forms the kids into the young and independent individuals that they are from the very start. Both Rose Mary and Rex think that the kids are smart and strong enough to take care of themselves which they are but some situations are too much even for an adult.

Quote on page 210: " "Have I ever let you down?" Dad asked. I heard the question at least two hundred times, and I'd always answered it the way I knew he wanted me to, because I thought it was my faith in Dad that kept him going all those years."
During the novel it is hard for Jeannette to accept that her life is tough. She wants to believe her dad when he asks if he ever lets her down but finds it hard to do so as he proves to always let her down. After asking her for the one-hundredth time in the novel she admits to only agree with him because she believes it helps his confidence. This helps her realize and accept that her father will almost always let her down no matter what he has to say. Even with her mother she has to learn to accept that she is greedy and doesn't care much about the children. She also learns to accept that her father is a no good drunk that cares more about money than his own family.

Quote on page 229: "You took our money, I said"
This quote shows that Jeannette realized her father is the one who steals the kids money. She grows up and finally decides to open up her mouth without holding back.
Over the time that we see Jeannette growing up we don't really see her come of age until she realizes who her dad really is. This opens up a whole new perspective for Jeannette and it changes her life for the better. When this happens she becomes more independent than ever and begins making bigger decisions on her own like moving to New York.

Quote on page 258: " It felt unbearably selfish, just downright wrong, to be indulging myself with an education in the liberal arts at a fancy private college while Mom and Dad were on the streets. "
Even though Jeannette and her siblings show a lot of hate towards mom and dad in the middle of the book they try to watch out for them towards the end of the story. This clearly shows that they lighten up a bit and give them a helping hand despite the amount of times Rex and Rose Mary have let the family down. Lori, Jeannette, and Brian show some forgiveness and sympathy as they offer some help because they'd hate to see their parents end up homeless forever. They begin to attempt to give them a helping because they feel selfish for finally being able to live a stable life and not including their parents in it.

Quote on page 25: "When Dad wasn't telling us about all the amazing things he had already done, he was telling us about the wondrous things he was going to do. Like build the Glass Castle."
In the novel the father, Rex, tries to lighten up every situation with any lie he can possibly think of. He is always bringing up their dream of "The Glass Castle". This is a dream that Rex has always had planned for the family but is never able to go through with it as things for them always goes downhill. They try to fantasize about it no matter how bad things get but they really need to realize that something as big as "The Glass Castle" will never happen especially with the lifestyle they live. As a kid Jeannette always believes her father when he says that their life isn't as bad as they think but over time this mindset of Jeannette's changes. She begins to realize that she has been living a lie and needs to do something about it as soon as possible.

Greed

Quote on page 212: "So, with Dad's blessing, I went upstairs."
Greed is on of the biggest themes in the book. We can see greed be shown in many ways all throughout 'The Glass Castle'. Rex is one of the main characters that portray this theme in the novel. Rex is probably the greediest person in the story as he does things such as hide and even steal money from his own family. Rex is so greedy that he is willing to sell Jeannette for a couple of minutes to some creep who is looking to sexually assault Jeannette while he is drunk. The mans name is Robbie. Another person that shows they can be greedy would have to be Rose Mary. Rose Mary does things such as hide food from her family especially when they are starving and keep it all to herself. She not only proves that she is greedy but shows quite a bit of selfishness by doing so.
