My podcast idea came to me while I was listening to the frogs and birds in the creek. I was wondering what they could be saying and doing. Then I spotted the aeroplane shaped cloud above me and I got thinking. Maybe they are going on holiday, or the plane is going to crash. The twilight atmosphere gave it a real sense of drama. The slight movements of a tree as a bird moved, the russell in the grass as I moved, or the wind picked up. I noticed all the grass around the log I was on, and thought that would be a cool camouflage. I love Harry Potter and the slow darkness made me think of him, so I found some small twigs that could be a wand for a frog or bird. We had just discovered the Parallxis: (The Parallaxis – a Game of Walking between Worlds, n.d.) website in class the night before and I found a crack. Could this been a line between my world and the world of the frog and bird adventure? The more I thought about the adventure the more excited I got. But how could I include all 3 languages? I decided to use different voices and sing a song during my podcast, changing my voice to create drama and suspense. I then had a vision of the frog teaching the bird how to jump and made myself laugh at the images in my head. I found myself trying to jump like a frog, as a bird while listening back to my podcast. It was a lot of fun to make and play with the creative response and there where so many options I could of gone with. I was thinking about being a frog and hopping around making different sounds at one point.

I can hear frogs, birds, and the traffic. It feels like the frogs and birds are talking to each other. Are they playing? Arguing? I wonder what they could be saying to each other. The feeling of stillness and slight chill in the air together with the sounds and twilight creates an almost magical feeling of drama and movement. The slight movement of a branch as I pass underneath, the slightest breeze moving the grass. The small twig- could it be a wand? What was that russell? Is it frog? Sitting here is making me feel relaxed. It has been a long day at work and it’s nice to just sit and connect with nature. The wind is starting to pick up and carry the sounds across the creek and valley, making an orchestra of sounds. Reminds me of the deep listening video(Oliveros, 2015). I wonder how long the delay is between the noises being made and me hearing them on the wind? The more I focus I can pick out the different layers. The wind, the frogs ( they are so noisy tonight), the birds seem to have become a bit quieter. I have an overall sense of calm, and my imagination is starting to take over. I can imagine the birds and frogs talking to each other, encouraging play, movements and drama to form in my head. What could they be doing? This is what lead me to making a podcast.

Sitting out here on this visit has made me think of home. Growing up on farm I felt very connected to nature. We climbed trees, feed the animals, made up games of families, cops and robbers, taxi drivers and race drivers. We spent most of our days outside. We learnt about the drama and movements of a farm, weather it was the rains, the drought, a calf being born ( normally needed help in the dark and in the rain). The sounds a cow can make when giving birth are like nothing I’ve ever heard. It is so hard to describe.

I think the combinations of music( sounds), movement and drama leads to a magical time, rich with imagining, learning and play. The reading Nature and young children: Encouraging creative play and learning in natural environments (Wilson, 2018) supports my ideas in that children need time outside to explore, make sense of, imagine and just play in the world around them. This doesn’t mean we should just leave them outside with nothing thou. We need to role model and scaffold some ideas, especially in the younger years to strengthen and awaken the skills needed for play.

This experience has led to me think about my past, upbringing, my teaching styles and how children experience nature. I have found myself sitting with the children and encouraging them to just listen to the sounds, movements and drama in the world around us. The reading Movement in the wild: Nature as a dance partner, (Movement in the Wild: Nature as Dance Partner - the Earthbody Institute, 2017) connects with my feelings of embracing the natural world, and responding with movements, sounds and creative imaginative play. As an example my babies respond to the bird calls they hear with Arhh Arhh. They have also taken to calling birds either birds or Arhh Arhh. We seem to have more birds around our yard now. From this they have learnt that the birds live in the trees, and we are looking at how they fly. I can see this also links in a little with the Hundred Languages of Children : The Reggio Emilia Experience in Transformation (Carolyn Pope Edwards et al., 2011) reading from class too. The children are being creative, making sounds, while also learning about life cycles and the ways of the world.

All of the readings and videos I have mentioned during this assignment have really connected the dots together in my head. There are so many more readding I could of added, as they all work together so well. The Deep listening video (Oliveros, 2015). the Nature and young children (Wilson, 2018) reading and Movement in the wild(Movement in the Wild: Nature as Dance Partner - the Earthbody Institute, 2017) reading I found went together well. Without deep listening and being experimental with sounds in nature, we cannot connect to where we are, who we are or be able to truly immerse ourselves in movements and dramatic play. If we don’t listen to the what the world is trying to tell us, to dance with us and tell a story, how will we ever be able to pass on stories, create new ideas or feel at home? Its up to us to embrace what the world has to offer, dance with nature, create new histories and ensure the children of today have the opportunity to just play.
