Cyclone Yasi upgraded to a category 5 system on the February 2.

The massive storm destroyed homes, shredded crops and smashed marinas and island resorts.

As it rises, it is cooled, condensed and forms a cloud. Fast winds occur as a result of a high difference in pressure. When a area of high pressure reaches the atmosphere, it is forced to move wide. As it moves further wide, it starts to move in a spiral motion. This is how a Tropical Cyclone is formed.

Julia Gillard (Priminister of Australia at the time) had sent 4,000 troops from Townsville and 1500 soldiers in Brisbane assist people in distress in North Queensland. Ships brought 110 trucks of food and supplies. 120 SES volunteers, including some from Tasmania and Victoria, had come up to help with the cleanup.

Group and Organisation Response
SES had a big job on their hands to help victims through the storm. They had to invite the fire brigade to get involved. The Australian Defence Force also offered help.  $17 million was given out to people who can no longer work and approximately $457 million dollars were spent by the Government to help communities.
