Back in Chapter 2 Cherry talked to Ponyboy about how the Socs were exactly like the greasers but different at the same time. Here you can see that Randy felt bad about all the stuff he did to Pony and the other greasers because he now knows that nothing good comes out of fighting because it can lead to harm and death.

Characters: Randy and Ponyboy have what was probably the first civil discussion between the Soc's and Greasers. They talked about Bob, the upcoming rumble, and Johnny. They came to the conclusion that money can give you hate, and the simplest thing you can do to avoid this hate is to tell the truth to someone, no matter who they are.

In Chapter seven, Randy and Ponyboy talk face to face, and they see each other as equals. Ponyboy realizes that socs aren't actruly heartless. In fact, he was just a guy. Randy sees this in Ponyboy too. Randy also explains that he doesn't want to fight. He states that it is pointless, and doesn't change a single thing. Socs will still be socs, and greasers will still be greasers.

After his talk with Randy he realizes, for a second time, that they all have worth in this world, and no one deserves the pain of losing someone close to them.

Theme - When Ponyboy and Randy discuss the Greasers versus Socs, he finally realizes what Cherry meant. No matter what, there will always be the Greasers and the Socs, and all the fighting will only result in more pain for them both. The way Randy feels about Bob's death is the same way Ponyboy feels in fear of that happening to Johnny. Despite the different social classes, they can relate in that sense, and taking the anger out by fighting will only cause the cycle to continue.

Theme: I feel like everybody wants what other people have. Socs want to have a good beating or to be denied sometimes. They want to experience having a harder life instead of everything handed to them on a silver platter. Whereas the greasers want to have a wealthier life with nice cars and not living in such fear all the time. This could be related to our time too. A person might want what someone else has but they don't know the struggles that would come with the privilege.

Character: The discussion that occurred between Randy and Ponyboy showed that as either a Soc, or Greaser, both sides are at a fault. Greasers get blamed for everything, and Socs get away with everything is what Randy stated. Randy also brought up how now that there are fights going on between both sides, he feels as though no one is a hero, but Ponyboy says that anyone can be a hero based off of one's individuality, not class.

Twice now, Ponyboy finds out that the label "Soc" doesn't even begin to describe the reality of those people. They have feelings though they try not to, and they are not a different species than greasers. Randy feels that fighting is not worth it, and it will just bring more pain in the world instead of bringing peace. I agree, because no matter what side looses, they will strike back harder next time. Peace can not be made through battles fought for pride.

when Pony boy and randy were having their discussion randy talks about how he sees no point in fighting. For pony boy this made a lot of sense because he felt the same way and they both were able to agree that the socs get away with everything while tho greasers are blamed for everything. to pony boy, this is just another way for him to see the other side of things like how cherry said that the greasers and the socs are same but different back at the beginning of the book. he is starting to fully understand there there will be no end to the cycle of fighting between the greases and socs which is why he feels there is no point in fighting at all.
