Dear readers,

Unfortunately, a lot of families in Britain are exposed to family poverty. They don’t have enough money to buy daily necessities like food and clothing. Because of that, a lot of children have their first meal at school, if possible.

The programs or businesses that can make this possible are food charities. But an even better alternative, some might say is: Can Cook. Can Cook makes over 4.000 free hot lunches a week for nurseries. They also make a lot of free meals, around 37.000.

Can Cook doesn’t like to describe themselves as a food charity, since it sounds too condescending with mostly bad quality meals.

Personally, we think Can Cook is an amazing invention. They help the people (especially children) in need, who have no control over their situation.

We don’t think that there is much wrong with the company. They make meals for schools and they are even trying to get their meals in small convenience stores for the small prize of 2 pounds. This way children can get them when there isn’t school, like on the weekends of during holidays.

But there are some people who don’t like the idea of Can Cook, especially parents. They say that the food in the meals is too foreign. Their children don’t know the kind of vegetables Can Cook uses in their lunches. But we think that makes it even better, in that way the children can have a more various diet (which is very much recommended by doctors).

We really hope Can Cook becomes even more successful in helping children get to a healthier lifestyle.

Britt & Laura

A few nice people have decided to make dishes for the children who can’t afford to buy a meal. They help many children around Liverpool and play centres in Flintshire. Over 37000 meals are being served for the children around Merseyside. Simon Bazley, a play worker at the biggest centre of the lot, was desperate to bring the children the meals they need, because many of them don’t eat at all if Simon doesn’t bring it to them. Of course this is weird, because they live in the sixth-richest country in the world, still the children have the risk to not eat enough food a day.

Robbie Davison, another social enterprise’s boss, despises food banks because the food is from poor quality. Because he thinks food banks have a too poor quality, he started a company himself. He wants to be a chef who makes healthy food, like Jamie Oliver dishes but then to poor people. Also Davison thinks that the children’s intelligence is too low if it is about healthy food. He likes to give context about the food he serves, so the children know what they’re eating. He thinks it is pretty impressive that he runs a company that is not for charity, but that it is a real enterprise.

Guy Biesmans and Gavin Veugen

No food during the holidays Dear readers, Can Cook is a social enterprise that cooks fresh meals everyday for children that don’t get enough food, because of family poverty. They cook over 4.000 free lunches a week for nurseries around Liverpool and play centres in Flintshire. In total can cook makes around 37.000 free meals in Merseyside alone. For some children this is their first meal of the day. Up to 3 million children spending their school holidays at risk of not getting enough food. Some parents don’t like the healthy food Can Cook serves their children. “If we turned up with spinach and quinoa, they’d tell me to stop feeding their children shite”. The children don’t even know the names of the vegetables they are eating.Robbie Davison is the social enterprise’s boss of Can Cook. He despises food banks. For example the Trussell Trust’s and Fareshare. He condemns them for serving poor food to poor people. Food banks feed the people what they can, not what the people need or want. But foodbanks won’t disappear. Foodbanks are part of the system, they will stay, whether the people like it or not. Can Cook is, in contrast to foodbanks, a social enterprise and the staff is on the real living wage.Davison also wants to create ‘good food areas’ and he wants to sell the Can Cook meals for £2 per meal in convenience store. So that people who don’t have access to food banks can still get high-quality, low-price meals. We hope you now know more about Can Cook and that you enjoyed reading the article.

Fellow Students it has come to my attention that our country has a big problem when it comes to feeding poor children. In a worst case scenario these children go to school without being fed and in a best case scenario they get an unhealthy schoolmeal, there has even been one case where a child was fed nothing but crisps for multiple weeks. There are some solutions to this such as foodbanks but one company has found a better alternative. Can Cook is a company that provides food to poor families for free just like a foodbank but they don’t want to be called a foodbank because they provide healthy and nutricious meals. Can Cook funds these efforts by selling their meals to schools and grocery stores so everyone can have low cost healthy meals. It is sad that a company needs to fix these problems whilst the government sits idily by voting on 8 different kinds of brexits which will only make these poor children suffer even more. I think that we as a society should make everyone aware of this dire situation so the government might finally do something about it and lift the responsibility from companies like Can Cook
Jelle & Kjell

The solution to the risk of children not getting enough food. Dear readers, Today we will discuss a big problem in our country, we will talk about the risk of children not getting enough food and why food banks aren’t a solution for that. The organization ‘Can cook’ is a possible solution for malnutrition and it could even be the alternative to food banks. Across Britain, 3 million children are spending their summer vacation at risk of not getting enough food. Therefor Can Cook makes a lot of free meals for those children with poor families. Robbie Davison, the boss of Can Cook condemns food banks for giving ‘poor food’ to poor people. He hates the food aid system and foodbanks such as Trussel Trust and FareShare. His organization only makes good and healthy meals. Still, there are some people who are not happy with the kind of food Can Cook serves to their children. Davison is negotiating with the counsels to establish good food areas, but a lot could go wrong. Still, Davison prides himself on running not a charity, but a social enterprise run on a business-like basis. Personally, we think that ‘Can cook’ is a great alternative to food charity. Especially children deserve nutritious and healthy food to grow up with instead of ‘poor food’ which is past the date. Can cook indeed is a great alternative to food charity. He describes the food banks as ‘a poor food for poor people’ organisation. Davison began this organisation because he also lived in a malnourished childhood.

Dear readers,

Free meal at school, food for nothing or good for nothing?

Most schools don’t even offer free meals, just like our school, even though it would be preferable to do so. This is especially beneficial for students living in poverty. They often don’t eat anything before school, leading to a loss of focus and bad grades. They don’t get the nutrition they require for their day-to-day activities at home. The solution to this problem would be to offer free meals at school.

This, however, may be detrimental to the parents of the children. Offering free meals at schools would have to be a government initiative, meaning the budget for a different department needs to be cut, the costs of welfare checks need to be cut, or the taxes need to be raised. The latter two would result in lower income for people in poverty, in turn again leading to difficulties providing for children in poor families.

So, what can be done? That’s what Can cook’s boss, Robbie Davison, asked himself. Seeing the issues with nutrition in a modern, economically successful country like the UK, he cooks meals made from leftover food provided by farmers and producers. These meals are regular, healthy meals. By offering these to kids instead of the unhealthy foods they normally eat, he hopes to improve the health, focus and grades of poor children.

Menno van Term en Orin Pechler

The organisation Can Cook makes these meals for school kids who probably wouldn't eat if they don't get those meals.
The founder of Can Cook is Robbie Davinson, he created Can Cook as an alternative for food banks. He did that because he hates foodbanks, because he hates the food aid system and thinks the meals are unhealthy. He says that food banks feed poor people what they can, not what the people need or want!
You might think that Can Cook is a charity, but it is not. Your body will give up on you eventually!
Because of Can Cook this is not likely to happen to you. Can Cook is an organization by Robbie Davinson that makes over 4000 hot lunches a week. They deliver them for example to the kids in North Wales who can't afford a meal everyday. Because of this a lot of kids get to know healthy food better and they are well nourished. The Can Cook organization has seen kids who don't even recognize a slice of courgette! Can you imagine... This is what Robbie Davinson is trying to fight. That's why he also despises food-charity's They feed poor people what they can not what the people need or want. By doing this he thinks the people won't get selfrespect and no chance to rise out of poverty. We fully agree with the concept of the Can Cook enterprise. Poor people also have the right to a healthy meal and we think that it is very good Can Cook helps with this

Jet Laven and Lisa Rensma

Davison doesn’t like this, so he makes fresh and healthy food for the children.

Some parents don’t like the fresh and healthy food, they want that their children get the same food as they eat at home. At home they eat simple and cheap food like boiled potatoes, fishsticks and rice or they eat junkfood because most of the times is unhealthy food cheap food and healthy food is very expensive.

Many children in England grew up with unhealthy food such as hamburgers and pizzas.
