My name is Madison and I am a general education teacher in an ICT kindergarten classroom in the Bronx. The school that I am working in is the school that I attended from K-8th grade, so I still see some old teachers which is awesome! I was born and raised in the Bronx, where I still currently reside. I am in the Severe/ Multiple Disabilities program. I have experience working with students with mild disabilities. However, this summer I hope to fulfill my passion and work with children who have severe/ multiple disabilities. I have always wanted to be a teacher because of my love for children.

Journey Through Mathematics

Ever since I was young, I was never really fond of math. It always intimidated me because there was always one answer therefore there were more chances of getting the answer wrong. Throughout my math career, we were taught the right answer and the method to use, but never really how to explain our reasoning and provide explanations. I always enjoyed English more because there were multiple answers based on your own interpretations. However, once I began taking college math courses and learned how math was being taught in schools today, it no longer intimidated me. Now, I am the one who teaches math in my classroom and I love it!

My goal for this course is to gain a greater understanding of how to implement mathematical strategies for struggling students. I want to learn how to intervene and pull small groups of students who are struggling with mathematical concepts in my classroom. I also want to learn how to incorporate more writing into my mathematical instruction because writing is the instructional focus in the school I am working in.

I have a few things on my bucket list, so I will write one that is educational and one that is not. I always wanted to teach abroad in a developing country. I would love to teach all subjects to these children and stress the importance of education. Something that is not educational but I have always wanted to do is take a tour of a few countries in Europe and learn about the culture there. My ancestors are from Ireland and Germany so I would love to learn more about their culture and traditions.

I congratulate you on your going back to your roots to teach where you learned as a child. I think that is an amazing fete in and of itself. Secondly, I'd like to highlight a very important part of your "journey through Math" where you mention that you never was really fond of math. I like the fact that you overcame your anxieties through 1st observations and taking college courses and then implementation/teaching the very thing that intimidated you in the first place. I wish you continued success on your journey. it appears you have all the necessary tools to achieve your goals.
