Before I start speaking on Ben Ratliff's Every Song Ever let me first say I have enjoyed this class very much. I learned a lot from Dr. Prince's lectures, the TA's, and the discussions. The Padlets were tons of fun and they forced me to think creatively and intellectually about music. I learned how to truly analyze each sound and "appreciate music" (<insert winky face>). With me being honest about my opinion and review of the class I will now give my honest review of Ratliff's book.
I disliked it. His ideas and his understanding/explanation of music are great. You can tell he understands music and he is passionate about how it is made, but he is not explaining anything that I did not already recognize. He also cannot explain anything without inventing a word. We have billions of words I know there is something you could find that explains your point and actually exists. I feel that if I tried I could write a better book than his. Especially, after all I learned from being in class.
