In Chapter 1, Trevor Mackenzie focuses on building curiosity and encouraging students to take ownership of their learning. He highlights the importance of creating a safe, supportive environment where questions are valued as much as answers. The chapter encourages teachers to reflect on how they model curiosity and support student agency. It reminded me that inquiry is more about fostering a mindset than following a strict framework, and it inspired me to think about how to help students feel confident and capable in their learning journey.

Dhruma Mehta

The chapter talks about why teaching How to Ask Questions is important. Children lead their own learning in an exploratory way. Teachers change from pedantic styles to facilitator styles. In a phased approach, starting from structured inquiry that builds up to controlled and guided, and culminates in free inquiry, the book appears to be full of practical suggestions that we can bring into our classrooms.

As I discussed in my detailed presentation during our online meeting, the Question Staircase Routine is more effective when learners are familiar with framing closed and open-ended questions. I implemented this routine with my students, and they initially adapted quickly to posing both types of questions. However, as we progressed to higher levels of questioning, they encountered challenges and required additional support in creating and positioning their questions within the routine. This process involves higher-order thinking skills, which proved to be more complex for first graders.

Given this experience, I believe that while the routine can be valuable, it may be better suited for older grades.

Regards,

Aditi Awatade (Symbiosis International School)
