It is the ability to respond a situation beyond the barriers of governments and making an effort to approach issues in a world-wide, unified system.

Schools prepare students to be global citizens by showing them the world - maybe by helping them physically travel or by bringing worldly perspectives and situations into the classroom. Within biology, teachers can incorporate the contributions of underrepresented groups and amplify voices of those traditionally unheard. As a school, an effort for diversity, equity, and justice should be obvious and transparent.

Within biology, there are many people from other nationalities, communities, and backgrounds from my own that have contributed to our knowledge of it today. One example is Henrietta Lacks. She was a black woman in the 1950s whose cells were taken without her consent. These "immortal cells" have been a foundation for countless medical advancements.

In biology, when looking at environmental issues, students can be encouraged to consider the situations of people in food deserts, being affected by sea level rise, and the expanding territories of mosquitos. I can help them understand this better by intentionally including examples from other places and opening discussion about others' situations.

One activity that highlights international mindedness is in our study of human population dynamics. We specifically study how the empowerment of women can affect total fertility rate. In this lesson, students hear stories of women from different countries around the world (Nigeria, Japan, Italy, Australia, etc.) and analyze their experiences in the context of human population increase. This opens the conversation of equity as well as cultural differences in other countries.
