1. I found it kind of interesting how he was talking about his students enjoying having printed media. I can relate to that, there is a level of accomplishment that comes from having a piece of artwork printed and mounted.

2. I thought it was
kind of funny how he was saying he was teaching since he was 12 and i was just
thinking he must have been teaching his friends or a teacher’s assistant. Then,
I was like well if I’m ever a graphic design teacher i can say I've been
teaching graphic design since I was 14, since i used to TA a graphic design
class.

3. I like how Sean Adams said “…I realize now that, it’s not that I made a choice to be a designer. Design made a choice for me.” I feel the same way Art and technically has always gravitated towards me and being able to combine the two is amazing for me.

I love that in this industry, we as artist, network with each other. I feel like the graphic program at Gateway is a great example of this. The teachers are always willing to help students branch out and reach their best potentials whether it is pursuing a higher degree in another school or finding employment.

It is also very useful to know the language of design and knowing the history. When you know what another designer is speaking of it makes understanding design so much easier. You don’t want to find yourself lost not knowing what someone is speaking of.

Making sure to stay on top of the latest design trends is also an important part of being a designer. Doing your own research and talking to other designers to see what is new can allow you to create a design that is relevant and appealing.

I think the most important take away from those three videos is how important networking is. As someone who tends to be more introverted I sometimes find networking hard, but I can definitely recognize the importance of it. The chain reaction of freelance work or job offers that can come from networking is so important and helpful when you're just starting out.

I also like the section where he talked about how important design history is. Design trends are just like every other trend in our society, most are recycled from decades past, sometimes with a new spin on them. If you know design history and trends of the past I really think it will help you stay ahead of the game and be able to better predict what trends will emerge next.

Of course staying up to date on design trends is also very important. The design world is very similar to the tech world where things are constantly in motion and changing. It's really important to stay up to date on everything so you work doesn't look dated and you can keep moving forward.

As I've been reminded repeatedly by parents, teachers, and peers, networking is, doubtlessly, a critical tool for generating new ideas (i.e., maintaining a "sounding board"), collaboration, and finding work. I found it incredibly valuable, to reestablish that guidance in my mind. Clearly, the design field is structured around close professional connections, so this concept is vital.
Possessing knowledge in design history, especially typography, is also crucial, due to its widespread use in the field. Typography, from what I've learned thus far, is a complicated, nuanced, and historically-rich subject, and therefore worthwhile to examine in-depth.
Keeping oneself updated on recent design developments is also an excellent idea. While it's not necessary (or even advisable) to adhere to trends, being aware of the current, popular aesthetic assets--color schemes, compositions, typography, etc.-- is valuable for education's sake.

Sean stressed the importance of networking in this field because of how small the graphics community is. It seems even more critical in this field than many other fields. I found it interesting that companies would call teachers looking for designers and one of the ways to get employed is through networking with your teachers.
To me history of graphics is just as important as the current trends. We learn from history what worked, what didn't and maybe even get new ideas from the past. Just as history is important so are the current trends. No one wants to appear dated in their designs.

I think the most insightful thing in these videos was the emphasis on networking. I don't know if that will make it easier to get a job, or make it harder. It's super nice that in some cases people can get a job with the help of your mentors, but that also could be more challenging if you don't have a plan on where you want to be. That information will be helpful. The other thing I thought as helpful was learning the trends, also through networking.

Video 1: Advice for young designers getting started

I found the information about why networking is so important to be valuable. It is important to know your resources and be prepared to make new connections and look for opportunities anywhere you go. I keep an online portfolio that I can show to people from any location just in case I meet someone in the design field who would be interested in seeing my work. I also like that the point was made that it is good to keep up a good appearance and make a good impression because if you make a bad impression on someone it may be harder to get hired by anyone due to a poor reputation.

Video 2: The value of design history

I think this video brought up a very valid point in that it good to be able to go back and reference bits of design's past and take some important lessons from some of history's best designers. My grandma keeps a collection of art books full of the works of various artists and designers at her house and when I was younger I used to go through them and look at them all and its amazing what kind of impact that had on me and maybe influenced me on the path to a design career. I also still like to go back and reference different time periods of design. I just love it when I can create a relevant design for today by creating a unique twist on a concept from years ago.

Video 3: Staying on top of the latest design trends

Its always good to stay on top of the latest design trends. As was mentioned in the video there is a lot of resources to find all kinds of design works all over the internet through various websites. I utilize this access a lot personally. Something else I like to do to familiarize myself with the latest design trends is whenever I leave my apartment to take note of my surroundings. What kinds of designs newer and renovated buildings are using, what kinds of signs and posters do I see. Just walking out into the world is a pretty good indicator about what is trending and what is not.

A lot of this information has been repeated throughout high school and college for me, and for good reason as life as shown me. Networking being the biggest, it is what got me all my jobs actually, sure I had to interview for them all but what got me to the interview was someone saying hey check out this guy. The second big hitter for me was history, we can learn a lot just from what happened yesterday to fix tomorrows potential issues. Same goes for graphic design, we can see what work and what didn't and apply it to future projects.

Most of the information he gave in the video I've already heard of before. Networking and having connections is really important for landing a job anywhere. I used to think history was pretty boring but I later realized that there's so much you can learn from but just looking at older designs and historical designs. Even today we see some older trends come back. Which comes to the last clip looking back into history will be just as important as looking at current trends. The reason being that your design or project has to sell.

Networking and knowing the right people can help you be successful. Presenting yourself in a right way can help you. Understanding design the new and the old. The history of design can help with the future problems. Making sure to be up to date on new designs and new trends is essential. Talking to other people and knowing what is new helps to know what people are liking at that time.
