Since the 1900’s women have had significant progress regarding their rights. Women's barriers to educational, economic, social, and political participation have had exceptional growth. Throughout the 19th century, women obtained the right to vote, they could own property, they could divorce their spouse, gain custody of their children and even control their own money. Women also started to excel in the workplace by receiving more opportunities as well as better pay. In the 21st century men and women now get paid the same compared to the 1900’s where men would get paid up to 50% more than women. Society and humanity as a whole are the reason for these major changes but specifically women who stood up and fought for their rights.

There are many social factors that influence women's rights. One example would be societal expectations. The societal expectations in the 1900’s regarding women focused on them being a homemaker. Women were responsible for maintaining the home, and raising children. They were not seen as capable of doing both, or having a career outside of the home. Currently, societal norms have shifted and women are more widely accepted to have careers outside of the home. Women are now not assumed to just be a homemaker, but in most cases are assumed to have a job and life outside the home as well.

There are multiple economic factors that directly influence women’s rights. It has become more common to see women in the workplace and positions of power. However, throughout history and today there is still economic inequality. In the past, when women worked in factories, they were paid much less than a man doing the same work. The same is true today for women in many different fields. There is still a wage gap between the sexes that must be addressed. In addition to this, many women still do work in the home, which is unpaid and sometimes not recognized the same as those working outside of the home.

There are multiple political factors influencing women’s rights. In the past, feminism focused on a woman’s right to vote, as they were not given voting privileges like men. As well, in the 1900’s there were few or even no women in the government. Today men still outnumber the women in the government but have definitely improved compared to the 1900’s. Currently, politics still negatively affect women. An example of this is found in Texas, where a woman’s right to choose abortion has been taken away by the government. This is a basic human right which has been taken away from women. In an ideal society supporting women, women would have the same rights as men in all parts of government legislation, with freedom to govern themselves.

Men are one of the main reasons women have had to fight so hard for their rights. Many men in history either thought women should have no rights or just did not care enough to fight for them. Men are the cause of many things women have had to fight for. For example, the right to divorce, the right to vote, the right to own property. These were all laws men passed so women had to rely on them. The government is also a reason for women having no rights in the 1900’s. The government passed laws over and over keeping women from being able to survive without a man. Many laws they passed were meant to take away women's rights. They passed laws forbidding women to have an education, a job, and everything else mentioned such as the right to vote. By not allowing women the right to vote it took away any chance of having people in power who would change things and give women any power.

Feminists are the reason women eventually got rights and are free today. They stood up and fought for women no matter what it took, specifically in the 1900’s when women got the right to vote. When women fought for the right to vote it started the first wave of feminism which led to second, third, and fourth bringing us to today where women do not need a man to survive and have equal rights. There were many other rights which feminists in the 1900’s started to fight for such as greater access to education and more equitable pay with men. Without these early 1900’s feminists women might still have no rights and have to rely on men.

There are many actions that should be taken to defend the rights, identity and heritage of women's rights. Actions that could be taken are talking and remembering the women who fought for the rights we have today. This way we will not take advantage of what we have. We also need to educate others, specifically men, on the history of women and what we went through. This in turn will help them understand and be more compassionate and if we ever were in a situation where we needed help fighting for our rights they could help. We also need to keep fighting for more rights. Even though society for women has improved drastically, there are still changes needed. There is still a need for more women in positions of power within the government and leading in the workplace. Women must also continue to fight for equal pay, and their reproductive rights.
